Job Description

This post will cover 5 clinical sessions per week. 50% of the role will involve working alongside the Ophthalmology doctors reviewing a variety of patients with ophthalmic conditions. The other 50% of the role will support the triage service.

Triage Service

The triage service receives referrals from multiple sources including:

  • GPs
  • Opticians
  • Streaming from the walk-in centre
  • Accident and emergency
  • The wards also refer patients

Patients with long-term ophthalmic conditions can also access triage when required.

Role Responsibilities

The post holder will be expected to act as an autonomous ophthalmic nurse practitioner to co-ordinate the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation, and evaluation of appropriate programs of care for patients requiring ophthalmic emergency care. The post holder will be expected to act as a role model for nursing and non-nursing support staff and work with the multidisciplinary team ensuring that a high standard of holistic care is maintained for all patients and their families.

The service will be audited annually by the emergency nurse practitioner to provide patient feedback for the nurse-led emergency service.
