To revolutionise the care and treatment for patients facing the prospect of sight loss by creating a new national network of specialist eye clinics that have a seamless link with all optometrists and GPs.

We provide services for NHS ICBs, NHS Trusts and Foundation Trusts, and other providers of NHS funded services. We deliver over 125,000 patient interactions annually, including outpatient appointments, diagnostic testing and eye surgery. Our services are delivered through a variety of models including Managed Services and Ophthalmology Joint Venture (OJV) Partnerships.

What We Offer

  • Salary: £36,000 - £37,500 per annum FTE
  • Bonus: Up to 5% annual bonus. Subject to criteria being met.
  • Leave: 200 hours annual leave plus bank holidays (pro rata)

Role Summary

Ophthalmic Nurses play an important role in the efficient and safe running of our services.

The Ophthalmic Nurse supports both outpatients across a range of clinics including general, pre and post-operative assessment and works very closely with the clinic assistants, theatre teams and doctors.

They also have a role to play on the day of theatre ensuring by supporting the preparation for patients for theatre, undertaking the role of runner in theatre and ensuring patients are well cared for in the recovery lounge.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties and Responsibilities

  • To accurately record patient history relevant to the clinic.
  • To perform a comprehensive range of diagnostic procedures and clinical assessments in order to provide the Consultant with the relevant information for diagnosis and treatment.
  • To advise patients on the appropriate care for their eye conditions.
  • To explain the implications of eye conditions, treatment options, medication and possible side effects to patients, some of which may be distressed or confused.
  • To ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.
  • To ensure that evidence based clinical standards of care to patients are achieved.
  • To ensure the delivery of agreed quality standards, taking any necessary action to remedy shortcomings in services that contribute to patient care.
  • To be responsible for ensuring the safe use of specialist equipment.
  • To assist in Minor Operations in the treatment room
  • To support the Consultant across all types of outpatient’s clinics undertaking diagnostic testing as required.

The Individual - Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge

  • Nursing degree or equivalent qualification essential.
  • Additional postgraduate specialist or equivalent experience required.
  • Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council essential.
  • 3 years or more hospital eye service experience expected.
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office products and using computerized systems for data input/output and review.
  • Practical skills: Visual Acuity/ IOP checks either Tonopen/Goldman Tonometer Visual Fields/ Pachymetry/ Slit Lamp Skills
  • Biometry/Corneal Topography/ OCT/ FFA/ IOP
  • Driver's licence or willingness to travel occasionally to spoke sites on a rotational basis.
