Ophthalmology - Consultant
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in Oculoplastics to join an established and supportive ophthalmology team in South East England. The successful candidate will provide specialist care across oculoplastics, orbital disease and thyroid eye disease, working alongside experienced consultants, a senior fellow and specialist nursing support.
This is a 10 PA permanent consultant post, offering a varied combination of specialist outpatient clinics, independent theatre sessions, MDT activity, emergency care and service development. The role provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to a tertiary ophthalmic service, develop specialist interests, and support the education and training of ophthalmology trainees.
Main Duties The Successful Candidate Will
- Lead specialist outpatient clinics covering oculoplastic, orbital and thyroid eye disease.
- Undertake independent theatre sessions involving oculoplastic and orbital surgery, including endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR).
- Provide care for both adult and paediatric oculoplastic and orbital conditions.
- Participate in multidisciplinary pathways and specialist MDTs, including skin cancer, neuro-orbital, head and neck and skull base MDTs.
- Manage complex oncological, inflammatory, traumatic and congenital orbital and adnexal conditions.
- Provide specialist advice to colleagues across other clinical specialities.
- Participate in emergency ophthalmic care and contribute to the general ophthalmology on-call service.
- Work closely with Neurosurgery, ENT and Maxillofacial Surgery colleagues where multidisciplinary management is required.
- Support and supervise fellows, speciality trainees and junior doctors.
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
- Participate in clinical audit, research, quality improvement and service development.
- Help develop and expand oculoplastic and orbital services across the wider region.

Person Specification
Essential:
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Full GMC registration with licence to practise
- FRCOphth or equivalent
- Orbital training experience
- Fellowship training in Oculoplastics
- Ability to undertake general ophthalmology on-call duties at consultant level
- Experience of adnexal emergency, trauma and tumour MDTs
- Clinical supervision training
- Strong surgical and clinical skills in the management of adnexal disease in adults and children
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
- Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
- Experience of clinical audit
- Commitment to safe clinical practice, training and continuous improvement

Desirable:
- CCT or within 3 months of completing CCT
- MD or PhD
- Educational supervision training
- Clinical trials experience
- Peer-reviewed publications
- Experience of working within NHS performance frameworks
Key Requirements
- GMC registration with a licence to practise
- FRCOphth or equivalent
- Experience working within the NHS
- Fellowship training in Oculoplastics
- Strong orbital and oculoplastic training experience
- Experience in orbital disease and thyroid eye disease
- Ability to participate in general ophthalmology consultant-level on-call
- Experience with adnexal emergencies, trauma and tumour MDTs
- CCT or within 3 months of completing CCT is desirable
