Ophthalmology Fellow - Emergency Eye Care
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Ophthalmology Fellow to join the Emergency Eye Care service at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust on a fixed-term basis. This is an excellent opportunity to gain high-volume, hands-on experience in the assessment and management of acute ophthalmic conditions within a busy and well-supported service.
About the Role
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering Urgent Eye Care services across the Trust, working within a multidisciplinary team to provide timely, safe, and patient-centred care. The post offers a varied and rewarding experience, including:
- Eye Casualty clinics
- Acute ophthalmology
- Opportunities to support service development and pathway improvement

Our Ophthalmology Department is a large and forward-thinking service delivering care across multiple sites including the Royal Berkshire Hospital and Prince Charles Eye Unit. Key Responsibilities
- Support delivery of Urgent Eye Care services, primarily within Eye Casualty
- Assess and manage a range of acute ophthalmic conditions
- Contribute to patient flow, working collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, timely care
- Participate in service improvement, clinical governance, and maintaining accurate clinical documentation in line with Trust standards
About the Trust
The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest District General Hospitals in the country. The hospital achieved Foundation Trust status on 1st June 2006. The Ophthalmic service has a successful track record of delivering high quality acute medical and surgical services for over 1,000,000 patients across Berkshire. The Trust is Reading’s biggest employer and may form the central hospital for one of the country’s new medical schools.

Service Statistics
The Ophthalmology department undertakes approximately 7000 day-case procedures per annum and provides approximately 100,000 outpatient attendances and over 20,000 Eye Casualty attendances per annum, serving a population of approximately 1 million.
Locations
- Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading: The service is located in the Eye Block and includes the Eye Outpatient Department and the dedicated Eye Day Case Unit. Inpatient care is provided on Dorrell Ward which provides care for Head and Neck patients. There are dedicated eye theatres.
- Prince Charles Eye Unit in Windsor: On the site of the King Edward VII Hospital. There are two fully commissioned ophthalmic theatres within the unit undertaking day case admissions and minor operations.
