Job Title: Optical Assembly Build Technician

Location: Farnborough

Salary: £DOE

The Role

As an Optical Assembly Build Technician, you'll be responsible for the assembly, integration, alignment, and testing of precision optical and optomechanical products.

You will work from engineering drawings, manufacturing instructions, and controlled production documentation, using specialist equipment to achieve tight optical and mechanical tolerances. Your work will include assemblies incorporating components such as lenses, mirrors, prisms, filters, beam splitters, and laser assemblies, alongside precision mechanical components.

You will also support inspection, fault finding, and continuous improvement while maintaining accurate production records and product traceability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assemble, integrate, and test precision optical and optomechanical assemblies
  • Carry out optical alignment using lasers, alignment telescopes, autocollimators, and associated equipment
  • Interpret engineering drawings, assembly instructions, and manufacturing documentation
  • Perform precision mechanical and optical inspections using specialist measurement equipment
  • Ensure products meet required quality, performance, and compliance standards
  • Maintain accurate production records, manufacturing documentation, and product traceability
  • Use ERP/MRP and electronic production systems to record manufacturing activity
  • Investigate faults and support root cause analysis and corrective actions
  • Contribute to continuous improvement across manufacturing processes and ways of working
  • Work closely with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams
  • Follow cleanroom procedures and contamination-control requirements
  • Maintain high standards of health & safety, quality, and housekeeping
  • Support the development of processes and procedures within the newly established team

About You

We are looking for a practical, technically minded, and detail-focused technician who enjoys working with precision products and takes pride in producing work right first time.

  • Extensive experience assembling, integrating, and testing precision optomechanical assemblies
  • Proven experience manufacturing products to engineering drawings and controlled work instructions
  • Hands-on experience with optical alignment and verification
  • Experience working with precision optical and mechanical systems
  • Previous experience within optomechanical, photonics, aerospace, defence, scientific instrumentation, or advanced manufacturing
  • Experience working in a cleanroom or controlled manufacturing environment
  • Good understanding of quality control, inspection, and traceability processes
  • Experience working with revision-controlled manufacturing documentation
  • Competence using precision measurement and inspection equipment
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Qualifications

You will ideally hold an NVQ Level 3, apprenticeship, HNC, HND, or equivalent in:

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Manufacturing Engineering
  • Photonics
  • Physics
  • Optics
  • Or another relevant technical discipline
