The Optical Consultant (Foundation) role is a full-time, on-site position based in Basingstoke. In this role, the Optical Consultant will:

  • Welcome and guide customers through their visit, from booking appointments to supporting them during eye examinations.
  • Help customers select suitable frames, lenses, and contact lenses.
  • Provide clear product information, explain pricing and offers.
  • Ensure customers understand their options based on lifestyle, prescription, and budget.
  • Maintain store presentation standards.
  • Handle basic administrative duties.
  • Support dispensing activities under supervision.
  • Work collaboratively with optometrists and colleagues to deliver a high-quality customer experience.
  • Follow company procedures and compliance requirements.
  • Contribute to sales targets.
  • Take part in ongoing training to build optical product knowledge and customer service skills.

Qualifications

  • Strong customer service and communication skills, with the ability to listen actively, build rapport, and explain products and services clearly.
  • Sales and retail skills, including confidence in recommending suitable products, handling transactions, and working toward store targets.
  • Teamwork and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively alongside optometrists, optical assistants, and other store colleagues.
  • Good organizational skills, reliability, and the ability to manage time, appointments, and store tasks in a busy environment.
  • Comfort using point-of-sale systems and basic IT applications; numeracy skills for handling payments and offers accurately.
  • Previous experience in retail, customer-facing roles, or healthcare environments is beneficial but not essential.
  • Willingness to undertake training and development, including optical foundation learning and progression within Boots Opticians.
