Job Title: Oral Anaesthetist

Specialty: Oral Surgery / Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Location: Wolverhampton

Shift Pattern: weekends

Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Oral Anaesthetist to provide anaesthetic support for patients undergoing oral and dental surgical procedures. The successful candidate will work closely with Oral Surgeons, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Nurses, HCAs and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure patients receive safe, effective and high-quality anaesthetic care.

The role will involve providing anaesthetic care for patients undergoing procedures in an oral surgery/theatre environment, with particular emphasis on patient safety, assessment, monitoring and recovery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake pre-operative assessment of patients to establish their suitability for anaesthesia.
  • Provide appropriate anaesthetic care for patients undergoing oral surgical procedures.
  • Administer and manage anaesthesia in accordance with professional standards, Trust policies and individual patient requirements.
  • Monitor patients continuously throughout the procedure and respond appropriately to any changes in their clinical condition.
  • Ensure appropriate airway management and patient safety throughout the anaesthetic.
  • Work closely with the Oral Surgeon and theatre team to ensure procedures run safely and efficiently.
  • Assess patients following their procedure and ensure they are clinically suitable for discharge or transfer to recovery.
  • Manage peri-operative complications and respond appropriately to emergencies.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive anaesthetic documentation.
  • Ensure appropriate equipment, drugs and emergency equipment are available and functioning before commencing the list.
  • Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control.
  • Participate in WHO surgical safety procedures and relevant clinical governance requirements.
  • Provide appropriate advice and information to patients regarding their anaesthetic and recovery.
  • Work within professional competencies and escalate concerns appropriately.

Essential Requirements

  • Relevant medical qualification and appropriate professional registration.
  • Current GMC registration with a licence to practise, where applicable.
  • Appropriate anaesthetic qualifications and experience.
  • Previous experience providing anaesthesia within oral surgery, dental surgery or oral and maxillofacial settings.
  • Experience managing patients undergoing day-case oral surgical procedures.
  • Competence in airway management, patient monitoring and management of anaesthetic emergencies.
  • Current life-support certification appropriate to the role.
  • Good understanding of patient safety, infection control and clinical governance.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary theatre or outpatient environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience in an Oral Theatre / Oral Surgery Theatre environment.
  • Experience providing anaesthesia or sedation for dental and oral surgical procedures.
  • Experience working within NHS Oral & Maxillofacial or Oral Surgery services.
  • Experience with day-case and ambulatory surgery.
  • Experience managing patients with complex medical histories undergoing oral procedures.
  • Previous experience within NHS Trusts.
