About The Role
At National Grid Interconnectors, we're at the heart of the UK's transition to a cleaner, more secure energy future. Our growing portfolio of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) interconnectors connects Great Britain's electricity network with neighbouring countries, helping to deliver reliable, affordable and sustainable energy across borders.
As we continue to expand and develop new interconnector projects, we're looking for talented individuals to help us operate and protect some of the UK's most critical energy infrastructure.
Our Operations team plays a vital role in ensuring the safe, secure and efficient running of our interconnectors 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
We're looking for a Senior Operational Technology (OT) Engineer to join our Operations team and take a leading role in maintaining and enhancing the operational technology, networking and cyber security systems that underpin our interconnector assets.
This is a technically diverse role combining operational support, cyber security, asset management, project development and engineering leadership. You'll be responsible for ensuring OT systems remain reliable, resilient and secure, while supporting new technology implementations and driving continuous improvement across our operational sites.
You'll work closely with operational teams, specialist engineers, suppliers and third-party contractors to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, industry standards and National Grid policies.
The role is based on site at Vikinglink, Bickerfen, please note, you must be able to commute to site on a daily basis and have a full UK driving licence.
What you'll do
- Lead the installation, maintenance, refurbishment, fault investigation and performance monitoring of Operational Technology, networking and cyber security systems.
- Develop and manage new OT, networking and cyber security initiatives from concept through design and implementation.
- Support tendering, procurement and technical design activities for new projects and system enhancements.
- Ensure critical maintenance activities, software patching, backups, antivirus updates and access reviews are completed effectively and on schedule.
- Monitor asset health and system performance, identifying opportunities to improve reliability and resilience.
- Provide both proactive and reactive maintenance support across operational systems.
- Participate in a site call-out rota and support live operational incidents when required.
- Lead and coordinate incident response, recovery and restoration activities alongside suppliers and operational teams.
- Support and test business continuity, backup and disaster recovery arrangements for critical systems.
- Manage hardware, network and system changes, including commissioning and testing activities.
- Lead the training and development of operational teams on OT systems, cyber security procedures and incident response processes.
- Manage privileged devices and support the deployment of secure system configurations.
- Oversee physical and logical cyber security controls, including user permissions, network security measures and critical site security systems.
- Lead assurance, audit and compliance activities and support regulatory reporting requirements.
- Manage third-party contractors, ensuring all work is delivered safely and in accordance with business procedures.
- Support projects and operational activities across the wider Interconnectors portfolio, including IFA, IFA2, NSL and Viking Link sites when required.

What you'll need
- Experience working with Operational Technology systems, industrial networks, cyber security solutions, control systems, protection systems, monitoring platforms, HVAC or building management systems.
- Knowledge of OT cyber security principles and the management of critical operational systems.
- The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.
- Experience working within a safety-critical operational environment.
- A proactive approach to health, safety and risk management.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience using asset management systems such as Maximo, Ellipse, Ultimo, IFS or similar.
- Experience of utilities, energy infrastructure, telecommunications, industrial automation or other critical infrastructure sectors would be highly advantageous.
- NVQ Level 3 or above qualification in Engineering, IT, Telecommunications or a related discipline, or an equivalent recognised apprenticeship.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Competent Person authorisation, or the ability to work towards authorisation.

It would be great if you had;
- Networking qualifications such as Cisco, CompTIA or equivalent.
- Awareness of industrial cyber security frameworks and standards, including ISA/IEC 62443.
- Understanding of regulatory requirements such as the Network and Information Systems (NIS) Regulations.
- Health and Safety qualification such as IOSH, NEBOSH or equivalent.
- Experience within the utilities, energy or critical infrastructure sectors.

- A competitive salary between £54,090 - £63,940.00– dependent on capability.
