Location: A combination of in-person clinics in Edinburgh together with online consultations
Salary: £110,000 – £125,000 per annum prorated to 20 hours per week
About Castle Craig
Castle Craig is a long-standing residential rehabilitation hospital specialising in the treatment of alcohol and drug dependence and co-occurring mental health conditions. The hospital provides evidence-based, patient-centred treatment within a comprehensive multidisciplinary framework and is committed to maintaining high clinical and governance standards.
The Role
The post-holder will undertake direct clinical work and provide consultant-level medical leadership within the service. Working closely with other medical colleagues, nursing staff, therapists and senior management, the Consultant Psychiatrist will help ensure the safe, effective and timely assessment and treatment of outpatients with psychiatric, addiction and co-occurring mental health needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake comprehensive psychiatric assessments of new outpatient referrals and patients, including assessment of mental health, substance use, relevant physical health factors, risk and treatment needs.
- Provide ongoing medical review, treatment planning and risk management for outpatients.
- Prescribe and manage pharmacological treatments in line with clinical guidelines and hospital policies.
- Contribute to the medical oversight of detoxification and stabilisation programmes.
- Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to deliver coordinated, patient-centred care.
- Participate in scheduled multidisciplinary meetings, case reviews and clinical handovers as required.
- Contribute to clinical governance activities, including audit, incident review and quality improvement.
- Support safe referral, assessment, treatment and discharge processes, including liaison with residential and community services where required.
- Provide clinical advice, supervision and consultant-level support to other medical staff where required and within agreed governance arrangements.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory, professional and organisational standards.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Full GMC registration with a current licence to practise in the UK.
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in General Psychiatry or another relevant psychiatry specialty.
- Current or previous substantive appointment as an NHS Consultant Psychiatrist, or an equivalent consultant appointment that satisfied the recognition requirements of the relevant private medical insurers.
- Already holding, or demonstrably eligible to obtain, individual consultant recognition with Bupa.
- Experience in the assessment and treatment of adults with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions.
- Appropriate medical indemnity cover for independent consultant practice.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary outpatient service and to liaise appropriately with residential, inpatient and community services.
- Excellent clinical judgement, communication skills and professionalism.
- Commitment to safe, ethical and evidence-based practice.

Desirable Criteria
- Existing individual recognition with AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality or other major UK private medical insurers.
- Experience of clinical governance, audit and quality improvement processes.
- Experience in the assessment and management of managing medically and psychiatrically complex patients.
- Interest in teaching, supervision or service development.

The successful applicant will work within a structured and supportive outpatient rehabilitation setting, alongside experienced medical, nursing and therapy colleagues. The role offers a collegiate working environment with clear clinical governance arrangements and access to senior clinical support.
