Position: Outreach Worker for “Unpaid LGBTQ+ Carers” (1 year – fixed term)
(Hertfordshire-wide: With physical venues currently in St Albans & Hatfield)

FULL CLEAN DRIVING LICENSE ESSENTIAL

This role is a genuine occupational requirement:
Schedule 9 of the Equality Act 2010.

Hours per week: 15 hours p/w (5 days = Mon - Fri 3pm-6pm or 10am-1pm)

  • 3 hrs on a Saturday monthly (2 hrs activity & 1 hour monitoring & recording).
    Attending networking events may be requested as directed by Line Manager.

Salary: £17.10 per hour with opt-in 5% Pension Contribution

Contract: 1st October 2026 – 30th Sept. 2027 (possible extension)

Reporting to: Chief Executive

Purpose

The difference “Unpaid LGBTQ+ Carers” project aims to make

Over the course of the project you will liaise with venues to deliver a variety of mindful group activities and refer individuals to our Mentoring service:

  1. Reach, engage and book Unpaid LGBTQ+ carers, including those who care for LGBTQ+ people, into a programme of activities i.e.
    • Pasta Making
    • Card Making
    • Pottery Making
    • Social Activities, Days Out, Pride Events, etc
  2. Monthly groups allow participants to rest & recharge.
  3. Have a minimum of 40 Unpaid LGBTQ+ Carers engaged in activities per year.
  4. Consider differentiation of age, disability, sexuality, Gender and ethnicity – specifically challenging conversion therapy or other abuse.
  5. Deliver the in-person sessions with the support of another Outreach Worker, provided by Impactful Lives (Charity No. 1203136).
  6. Support referral mechanisms to enable access to Carers services.

Main Responsibilities

Recruit Unpaid LGBTQ+ Carers & Host in-person sessions
Recruiting, registering and checking attendance; reporting and ensure the smooth running and ensure full attendance at each venue.

Coordinate two main sites for in-person delivery: St Albans Museum & Mill Green, Hatfield Museum to ensure routine peer referral to our internal Mentoring support is offered where needed.

Main Duties

  • Use the existing LGBTQ+ people identified within our database to recruit.
  • Reach further yet unknown Unpaid LGBTQ+ Carers in Hertfordshire through outreach discussions, telephone contacts, social media and emails, encourage attendance to achieve and exceed target numbers, achieving at least the minimum outputs required for the project.
  • Make contacts and attendees aware of our Mentoring support for LGBTQ+ people to feel more able to achieve goals or overcome difficulties.
  • Set-up venues using a schedule of dates, populated and promoted through our platform “OutSavvy”, social media pages and groups on Facebook and Instagram as well as our website. Work with colleagues to maximise publicity.
  • Write Case Studies (minimum two per year), providing support for the attendees, facilitating refreshments, ensure equipment & materials are available.
  • Work within Policies and Procedures and ensure that the organisation Aims are met.
  • Encourage everyone to work towards our vision.
  • Distribute marketing publicity and campaign materials to raise awareness.
  • Drop off leaflets and send out electronic versions to various organisations.
  • Record participants contact details and attendance into our CRM, providing information with support on how our participants may access our other services throughout the project.
  • Work in accordance with processes including when working with vulnerable adults or children: Safeguarding and Data Protection.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge by attending training or networking events, promoting our LGBTQ+ & Carers issues and services.
  • Maintains accurate records, including service user files, and databases, and undertake all quantitative and qualitative monitoring within expected timeframes whilst also adhering to Data Protection.
  • Work in accordance with and actively promote the values of Impactful Governance, including equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Actively coordinate and attend supervision, training as well as Line Management and team meetings.
  • Work within the framework of Impactful Governance's policies and procedures, particularly in terms of confidentiality and safeguarding.

Additional Requirements & Notes

  • The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, good written and good software literacy to record and monitor progress.
  • Important factors such as the type of caring responsibilities, Mental Health, Learning Disability & Autism, finance or debt, housing, domestic abuse or bereavement mean linking with other Impactful Governance or Impactful Lives colleagues to support a range of issues.
  • Where suicidality is identified or a concern raised, this needs to be reported to the Designated Senior Person (DSP) for Safeguarding. The DSP is Andrew Waite and the Safeguarding Policy is to be followed when raising a cause for concern.
  • Where Domestic Abuse is identified or a concern raised, it will also be referred to the “Dual Spirits” project lead.
  • We find ways to Advocate on behalf of isolated and often overlooked LGBTQ+ communities. This involves sharing issues with our Chief Executive for reporting and to challenge those issues at a higher level.
  • We want to hear people’s personal journey and discover what obstacles are in the way of support. We sometime have researchers conducting LGBTQ+ interviews and questionnaires where we encourage staff to liaise and refer people to help make change happen.
  • Different LGBTQ+ communication methods may be needed for diversity & inclusion (e.g. ref: Polari).
  • This role includes Saturday working hours for in-person delivery.
  • Lived experience of staff on this project will ensure empathy and relatability, all staff are qualified.

Beneficiary Outcomes

Reach and register a minimum of 40 Unpaid LGBTQ+ Carers and ensure attendance at one of the venues over the project period (annually). Through discussions, telephone calls, social media and emails, make attendees aware of our Unpaid LGBTQ+ Carers groups. At events advise and refer to our Mentoring support for LGBTQ+ people to feel more self-aware and aware of issues that stand in their way of moving forward. It will build confidence to face the daily abuse some are suffering whilst with others, it will enable motivation to achieve new goals. Attendance to be recorded on our CRM “HubSpot” for each event.

You will record in HubSpot (CRM), reporting monthly on outputs and outcomes. Using case studies, observations, interviews and feedback forms to measure the impact.

Outcome Measures

  1. Reduction of mental health crises and social care dependency
  2. Reduction of social isolation
  3. Access information to a range of additional statutory services
  4. Access to financial information and support is available to unpaid carers.

We are a secular organisation (not having any connection with religion) and we do not participate in or host events connected to religious festivals, either at our venue or elsewhere. Conversion therapy is a form of repression and psychological abuse that will not be tolerated within our organization. We hold Annual General Meetings (AGM) where staff attendance is required.

There are some lifting and handling requirements for this role for activities and events that we organize or attend where publicity equipment and materials need to be carried manually i.e. Workshops, Pride Events, Network Events, etc.
