About The Role
At Balfour Beatty, we're delivering some of the UK's most complex and ambitious infrastructure projects. We're looking for an experienced Materials Manager (Package Manager) to lead all material management activities across a major project in Cumbria, ensuring materials are available, controlled and delivered safely to support successful project execution.
This is an excellent opportunity for a highly organised materials, warehousing or logistics professional to take ownership of material availability, inventory control, storage operations and logistics performance within a fast-paced construction environment.
What you'll be doing
As Materials Manager, you'll be responsible for ensuring the right materials are in the right place at the right time to support construction delivery.
Key Responsibilities Include
- Leading and managing a team of Materials Coordinators, Stores and Logistics personnel.
- Managing the procurement, receipt, storage, preservation and distribution of project materials.
- Ensuring material availability aligns with construction work packs and programme requirements.
- Maintaining accurate inventory records, traceability and stock control through Material Management Systems (MMS).
- Developing material delivery schedules in collaboration with Procurement, Supply Chain and Construction teams.
- Managing surplus materials, returns and preservation activities to minimise waste and maximise value.
- Monitoring stock levels, inventory accuracy and material utilisation across multiple storage locations.
- Managing Overage, Shortage and Damage (OS&D) processes and driving timely resolution of material issues.
- Coordinating on-site and off-site storage operations and logistics providers.
- Supporting construction teams with material forecasting and demand planning.
- Producing material management reports to support project decision-making.
- Driving continuous improvement across warehousing, logistics and materials management processes.
- Promoting a strong safety culture with a relentless focus on Zero Harm.

Who we're looking for
We're keen to hear from candidates with experience leading material management, warehousing or logistics operations in construction, engineering, manufacturing or FMCG environments.
Essential
- Experience managing materials, warehousing, stores or logistics operations.
- Proven experience leading and developing teams.
- Strong inventory management, stock control and materials planning experience.
- Excellent organisational and stakeholder management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work collaboratively across Procurement, Supply Chain, Construction and Commercial teams.
Desirable
- Experience within a construction materials warehouse environment.
- Experience working on major infrastructure, engineering, energy or nuclear projects.
- Knowledge of Material Management Systems (MMS).
- Understanding of material traceability, preservation and quality assurance requirements.
