The Packaging Innovation Manager will play a pivotal role in Twinings packaging innovation agenda. Driving the identification, development, and implementation of new packaging solutions in our business whilst working towards our Sustainability commitment.

The Packaging Innovation Manager will work as an integral partner with teams across the business as well as with external supplier partners. The role is required to ensure the delivery of a continuous and future focused pipeline of differentiated, innovative and consumer oriented great packaging solutions in the wellbeing beverage and experience space.

They will lead the innovation process for packaging; converting insight, consumer led ideas and unmet needs into feasible and viable solutions. The role requires a hands-on approach and an ability to deliver creative solutions against an ambitious agenda, by finding new ways and thinking differently.

Strong influencing and communications skills are a key enabler to this role, ensuring we can deliver leading edge thinking, with market insight and trend-led needs into actual product packaging.


Key Responsibilities

  • Work with Head of Packaging on a clear strategy and process around how Twinings delivers packaging innovation and be able to demonstrate this in practice.
  • Bringing proven innovation experience, work with a cross business functional team including Senior Project Managers and Product Development on the up-front innovation process, bringing agile thinking and experimentation to life.
  • Identify opportunity spaces for innovation through understanding consumer needs, brand, and business strategy and what is feasible and potentially possible.
  • Up to date with trends and latest technical material innovation, join the dots for the ‘so what’s’ feeding this into the Head of Packaging’s strategy and strategic planning.
  • Build and maintain a network of external expertise through suppliers and institutions.
  • Dedicate at least 10% of working time to working on look outside activities to stay fresh and up to date.
  • Regular travel and flexibility to work within the needs of different time zones of our key markets.
  • Accountable for new consumer packaging solutions in the business.
  • As a key project team member, lead the packaging workstream including pack development, testing etc for key innovation projects where new to business packaging materials or formats are required.
  • Demonstrate visible ownership and accountability by being proactive and owning the timeline as well as delivery of the packaging plan for innovation projects.
  • Demonstrate flexible and agile ways of working to bring performance, drive and pace across packaging projects.
  • Work in partnership with local Marketing Teams to support them in development of their packaging innovation ideas, taking close and further out market plans (grounded in consumer insight) to create a number of ideas across different platforms. Ensure the consumer’s voice is at the heart of what we do.
  • Work closely with marketing and insight teams to guide and facilitate pack consumer testing and insight generation to generate the brief for optimal solutions.
  • Devise and deliver the new and innovative packaging solutions, in conjunction with the product development team, that continually evolve the Twinings brand into a leader in the wellbeing drinks arena, delighting our consumers.
  • Working directly or through experts, provide technical expertise to support the delivery of the differentiated innovation packaging pipeline.
  • Demonstrate how packaging contributes to product lifecycle and consumer experience helping to support purchase decision making. Show how packaging design and format can aid sales and build brand image.
  • Ensure packaging ideas are feasible, Sustainable, future proof, safe and compliant working in collaboration with other internal functions.
  • Feed into the commercial Make or Buy decisions led by Team Supply
  • Understanding of key legislation that affects packaging and the potential impact on our business.
  • Continuously monitor new and emerging packaging trends, especially those in the drink and wellness markets, sharing these across Team NPD and all interested parties.
  • Proactive lead in the packaging community that operates across supply and NPD teams, creating a collaborative network and sense of ownership and pride as a wider team.
  • Key member of the ABF Packaging network.
  • Role model of Company values and Innovation Behaviours.
  • Build and maintain an internal network including Supply Centre Manufacturing, Quality and Packaging Technologists, Procurement, Regulatory and others working collaboratively with them to get the best outcome for the business.
  • Engage with all stakeholders to create excitement and ‘buzz’ around the work of the Packaging Team, demonstrating how the team are an enabler to Twinings’ future growth that they want to engage with.
  • Build and maintain key relationships alongside Procurement with Key strategic suppliers.

Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise

  • Demonstrable experience of leading packaging innovation programmes, translating NPD insight and briefs into fantastic products resulting in a significant business impact - A track record of success!
  • Managed and delivered varied and complex packaging projects at the same time.
  • Proven ability to work with cross functional teams and external suppliers under tight timings.
  • Industry expert knowledge of primary packaging materials.
  • Knowledge of how product design can influence packaging design.
  • Clear experience of design thinking and holistic product and Packaging development.
  • Extensive experience of working with external suppliers and partners to deliver innovative product solutions.
  • FMCG experience preferable and/ or evident experience of working in companies with different scales of production.
  • Experience of working with different countries and cultures internally and with strategic external partners/ suppliers.
  • Evident experience of supply and commercial environment.
  • Knowledge of sustainability trends and what is driving the Packaging Industry in this area.
  • A natural leader who can inspire others.
  • High personal accountability for delivering results.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and to tight timescales.
  • Ability to multi-task/juggle multiple priorities.
  • Clear communicator, both written and oral.
  • Track record for delivering on time and to budget.
  • Creative thinker who challenges perceptions about what the packaging future of wellbeing beverages could be.
  • Delivers through commercial thinking, understanding the commercial landscape of the business and the market and the impact of their role on this.
