Location Middlesbrough (with some travel to other sites)

Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a newly created role as Packaging Support Lead, in Middlesbrough with travel to other production facilities in the North of England.

The purpose of the role is to lead site-based packaging activities, including:

  • Container inspections
  • Container washouts
  • Packaging counts
  • Transactional governance for packaging

The role is key in:

  • Reducing packaging-related expenses
  • Supporting sales with container availability
  • Ensuring a safe working environment

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

ESHQ

  • Become competent in the inspection and testing procedures for various container types
  • Support the development and implementation of a packaging washout schedule, including robust startup and shutdown procedures
  • Report accidents, incidents, and near misses to the relevant staff
  • Co-operate on H&S, training, legislation, and environmental matters
  • Ensure good housekeeping practices and maintain site standards, including security
  • Manage and reduce risk using tools like Risk Assessments, Competence Development, and Safety Critical Task Analysis with related follow-ups
  • Report defects and breakdowns following company processes and procedures

Cost Management

  • Lead site-based packaging improvement initiatives in collaboration with the continuous improvement lead
  • Conduct regular packaging counts with compliance to SAP transaction processes
  • Support preparation of CAPEX budgets with the container manager
  • Participate in monthly Fleet Analysis Reviews with Finance, highlighting improvement opportunities
  • Report packaging improvement opportunities

Service Excellence

  • Enhance inventory availability through proactive improvements and risk communication
  • Ensure clear communication of relevant KPIs focused on container availability
  • Align inspection priorities with product demand, working collaboratively with the engineering department and container manager
  • Proactively review the number of containers in engineering inspection, highlighting risks for the following quarter
  • Liaise with the container manager and production on stock levels to optimize container turn times
  • Support investigations and resolutions for customer complaints, quality non-conformities (QNs), and shortages, implementing corrective actions

People

  • Maintain strong relationships with operations and commercial teams
  • Help maintain and update process maps for container and packaging processes for clarity on container transactions
  • Behave as an effective team member across site departments, fostering cross-functional collaboration and sharing best practices

Requirements

  • Attention to detail
  • Hands-on/practical approach
  • Good computer and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage workloads
  • Ideal background: Experience in the chemical manufacturing or chemical distribution industry (not mandatory but preferred)
  • Preferred qualification: Forklift licence (company will provide training for successful candidates)
