Packaging Technologist – Food Manufacturing

About the Role
We are partnering with a leading food manufacturing business to recruit an experienced Packaging Technologist for its manufacturing site in Batley.
Reporting into the Head of Packaging, this is a hands-on technical role with responsibility for delivering packaging development and industrialisation activities across the site, ensuring new packaging materials, formats and changes are successfully trialled and implemented into production.
You will act as a key packaging contact for the site, working closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, Technical, Quality, Procurement, NPD and external suppliers to ensure packaging projects are delivered safely, effectively, on time and within budget.
The role will also play an important part in continuous improvement and sustainability initiatives, identifying opportunities to improve packaging performance, efficiency and environmental impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage packaging development and industrialisation projects from initial handover through to successful commercialisation.
- Plan, coordinate and execute packaging trials across manufacturing and production lines.
- Assess and validate new packaging materials, formats and specifications before implementation.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance on packaging materials, specifications and performance.
- Support the introduction of innovative and sustainable packaging solutions while maintaining functionality, quality and cost effectiveness.
- Ensure packaging solutions meet required quality, regulatory, technical and operational standards.
- Troubleshoot packaging-related technical issues and work collaboratively with operational teams to identify effective solutions.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance packaging performance, stability and efficiency across the site.
- Coordinate and report on packaging trials, including transit testing, scalability assessments and production performance.
- Act as a key point of contact for packaging changes and developments across the manufacturing site.
- Ensure relevant systems, specifications and internal stakeholders are kept fully updated regarding packaging changes.
- Provide technical advice around pallet configurations and packaging optimisation.
- Build strong working relationships with packaging suppliers and external partners.
- Monitor developments within the packaging industry, including emerging technologies, materials and sustainability trends.
- Share knowledge, best practice and innovation with Packaging Technologists and wider teams across the business.
- Work cross-functionally to ensure packaging projects are delivered on time and in full.

About You
We are looking for someone with a strong packaging background who understands how packaging performs within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
You will ideally bring:
- Previous experience within packaging technology, packaging development or packaging engineering, ideally within food manufacturing or a similar FMCG environment.
- Strong technical knowledge of packaging materials, formats and specifications.
- Experience planning and delivering packaging trials within a manufacturing environment.
- An understanding of the packaging development and commercialisation process.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver against deadlines.
- An understanding of packaging compliance, quality and sustainability requirements.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the confidence to challenge existing processes and recommend improvements.
- Commercial awareness and an understanding of the wider operational and cost implications of packaging decisions.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- The ability to build effective relationships across Manufacturing, Technical, Quality, Engineering, Procurement and external suppliers.
- A proactive and curious approach, with an interest in new packaging technologies, materials and industry developments.
- A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively as part of a wider cross-functional team.
