Long-Term Locum Speech and Language Therapist – Purley, South London
Banding: Band 6/7
Location: Purley
Start Date: ASAP
Salary: £24.00–£45.00 per hour
Working Hours: Part-time or full-time, school term time
Job Overview
We are currently seeking a dedicated and compassionate Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) to join a specialist primary school in Purley, supporting children with moderate to severe learning disabilities.
This is a long-term locum opportunity for a Speech and Language Therapist who is passionate about working with children and making a meaningful difference to their communication and development. The successful candidate will hold a caseload of approximately 50 children, providing assessment, intervention and ongoing support tailored to each child’s individual needs.
The school prides itself on its child-centred approach, ensuring that children always come first. Staff work closely with pupils and their families to build strong, trusting relationships and create a supportive environment in which every child can thrive.
This role would suit an experienced Band 6 or Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist who is confident managing a caseload and working as part of a multidisciplinary educational team.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Manage a caseload of approximately 50 primary-aged children with moderate to severe learning disabilities and associated communication needs.
- Assess and identify children’s Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).
- Plan and deliver individualised and group-based speech and language therapy interventions.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, support staff, families and other professionals to support children’s communication and development.
- Develop and review appropriate therapy programmes based on individual needs and outcomes.
- Provide advice, guidance and strategies to school staff and families to support communication development throughout the school day.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical records in line with professional standards.
- Contribute to multidisciplinary meetings, reviews and wider discussions around pupils’ needs and progress.

Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for this role, you must have:
- A recognised degree in Speech and Language Therapy (or equivalent).
- HCPC registration and eligibility for membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
- Experience working with children, ideally within a specialist school or educational setting.
- Experience supporting children with moderate to severe learning disabilities and complex communication needs.
- Confidence managing a caseload and working independently.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with children, families and education staff.
- A child-centred and collaborative approach to therapy.
