Thomas Howse, established in 1903, are an independent industrial paint and powder coating manufacturer, centrally based in the West Midlands.
They offer a comprehensive range of surface coating and specialise in all the latest up-to-date processes, conforming to the latest British Standards. Thomas Howse have fully trained technical staff who are able to develop new paints and can adapt unique systems to suit individual customer requirements.
They are also looking at ways of reducing emissions by producing a wide range of high specification water-based paints and powder coatings that can be cured at low temperatures. These are all designed to reduce our carbon footprint and create a safer work environment.
They’re investing into the business, to continue to develop the company for the future. As part of this investment, they are looking for a fearless apprentice to join them, who isn’t afraid to be hands-on and has a desire to contribute to their goals long term, during this exciting time of growth and development.
The Package
- Starting salary of £16,500 per year (subject to review after 6 months)
- Quarterly production bonus and discretionary end year bonus (after successful completion of the 6 month probationary period)
- Monday to Thursday, 8:00AM – 4:30PM and Friday 8:00AM – 3:30PM
- 38 hours per week
- Pension Scheme
- 20 days annual leave, plus 8 statutory days (3 days have to be used for the Christmas shutdown)
- Uniform and PPE provided
What will I be doing as a Paint Technician Apprentice?
Thomas Howse Ltd is pleased to be able to offer you the opportunity to both earn a salary and study towards a nationally recognised qualification through our Level 3 Science Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship.
You will work through every aspect of manufacturing industrial coatings working closely with the production team, technical support and Quality Control. By the end of your apprenticeship, you will be fully conversant with the loading and operation of all production machinery, the filling operation and working with the technical and QC teams to ensure "Right First Time" and the development of new Green Products.

We manufacture industrial coatings for Agriculture, Construction, Engineering as well as the Rail and Road Transport industry.

Your Daily Responsibilities Will Include
- Manufacturing Paint Products
- Using Heavy Duty Equipment
- Pumping paint into tins
- Canning paint using bailing technique
- Using scales
- Computer Data Entry
- Maintaining a Clean Working Area
- Liaising with Co-workers
- Stock Control
- Complying with health & safety procedures
- All PPE will be supplied.

Qualifications
It’s about enthusiasm, not school results. In our experience the most successful apprentices are those who are driven to find out more about the sector, can be up front about what they do and don’t already know, are considerate, self-reflective, and impatient to learn the job role!
About You
This is a very hands on and practical role so you should be willing to get stuck in.
We’re looking for someone who is focused and careful in all aspects of work. You’ll be able to use your good attention to detail to identify problems and record observations. The ability to think on your feet is crucial due to the environment and nature of the role!

To succeed in this apprenticeship, you’ll need bags of enthusiasm, be a fantastic collaborator and be hungry to learn!
So how does the apprenticeship work?
Over 24 months, you’ll devote a minimum of 6 hours of your working week on ‘off the job’ training. This can include theory training (for example, virtual lessons & online learning), alongside practical training (for example shadowing, mentoring, & time spent writing assignments. Together this will count towards a Level 3 Science Manufacturing Technician apprenticeship. You’ll be trained by an expert tutor from Tiro as well as an experienced mentor at Thomas Howse Ltd who together, will make sure you develop the knowledge, skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your career.
Being an apprentice is hands-on, so you’ll get the chance to learn things you might otherwise not have experienced in a university or college environment.
The best part? You’ll be earning a salary while you gain your qualifications, meaning no huge student loans to pay back at the end of the programme!

Eligibility
While we never want to hinder your job application process with obstacles, there are some minimum requirements you’ll need to meet in order to do an apprenticeship, these are rules set by the UK Government.
You’ll need to be over 16, not in full time education, have lived in the UK for 3 years, and have the right to work in the UK.
