Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Ensure adherence to policy – You are a member of the team in your office. This means following all instructions from the more senior staff and assisting them as best you are able. You should act appropriately and uphold the integrity of the company.
- Diligent discharge of support duties – The primary purpose of your employment is to learn the business of fee earning and work with and learn from other staff. As a case worker you will not be judged alone on your commercial acumen but it is an important aspect of your job from day one. You should look out for and facilitate new work and client care.
- To work on and learn the workings of the office as a receptionist and paralegal duties. During this time you will receive detailed direction from other team members and will be responsible for preparing bundles and other documents, assisting staff as required, and learning the workings of a law office.
- Growth of the business – As a representative of the firm you must be cognisant of and work towards business growth by seeking out new clients and opportunities for yourself and others. This will include networking and marketing as well as making a good impression on other third-party stakeholders such as fellow Professionals and potential clients. Clients seen should be passed on after being signed up if the work required demands someone with more experience. Clients should not be rebooked or referred to a colleague.
- File running – The files are to be run in accordance with the Specialist Quality mark specification set out in the Operations Manual, with no exceptions. The standard to be applied is excellence not mediocrity. All files are to be run in accordance with the highest standards of the profession and client service. All directives from Solicitors must be followed in this and other aspects of the role. As support to the fee earning team you will undertake work on the files to ensure SQM compliance.
- Flexibility – We understand that legal practice can sometimes be unpredictable, so we're looking for someone who is adaptable and willing to support the needs of clients and the business when required. This may occasionally involve working outside of normal office hours, attending training courses or seminars, and taking part in professional development opportunities that may be held off-site or at different times of the day.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
