Job Title
£27,500 – £33,000
Gateshead | Full-time | Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm
About the Role
In this role, you’ll be embedded in the Legal Team, working side by side with solicitors on real case work from day one. When a contract needs drafting, when evidence needs assembling for litigation, when a complaint reaches the Energy Ombudsman, you’ll be the person making sure it’s prepared properly and on time.
As a Paralegal at Northern Gas and Power, you’ll support the full breadth of the in-house legal function, from commercial contract preparation and compliance through to litigation support, customer complaints, and regulatory correspondence. You’ll work closely with the Compliance Team and report directly to the Director of Legal Services.
If you’re building toward a career in law, whether through the SQE, CILEx, or a training contract, this role gives you the commercial exposure and hands-on casework experience to get there.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Preparing a variety of legal documents under the guidance of solicitors and company management, contracts, letters, case summaries, and claim documents
- Providing litigation support: assembling evidence bundles, preparing witness statements and court documents, managing case deadlines and court timetables, and liaising with external counsel
- Assisting with customer complaints alongside the Compliance Team, preparing responses to customers, the Energy Ombudsman, and third parties
- Undertaking legal research, reading case law, and preparing updates for the team
- Maintaining regular communication with the wider business, keeping stakeholders informed of matter progress
- Organising and archiving files and supporting documents to ensure nothing falls through the cracks
- Ensuring compliance with contracts, regulations, and company operating policies and procedures
A typical day will involve a mix of structured casework and reactive requests. Some days you’ll be deep in evidence bundles for an upcoming hearing. Other days, a solicitor will need urgent research on a regulatory question or a complaint response drafted within hours. Precision and adaptability are both essential.

Your First 90 Days
- Weeks 1–3: Structured induction into the Legal Team, the Compliance function, and the business as a whole. You’ll be introduced to the case management systems, meet key stakeholders, shadow solicitors on live matters, and get to grips with the types of work that flow through the team
- Weeks 4–8: You’re picking up your own work. Document drafting, complaint responses, and research tasks start coming to you directly. Your manager reviews your output regularly and coaches you on unfamiliar areas. You’ll be involved in litigation preparation and deadline management
- Weeks 9–12: You’re operating independently on core paralegal tasks. Solicitors rely on you for research, document preparation, and case administration. You’re managing your own deadlines confidently and starting to identify where you want to specialise or develop further
This is for You, If
- You have experience working as a paralegal or legal assistant in a legal environment
- You have strong analytical skills and genuine attention to detail, legal documents demand precision
- You’re comfortable with legal research, case law, and can distil complex information into clear summaries
- You’re proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and comfortable learning case management software
- You can manage multiple deadlines simultaneously without letting quality slip
- You understand the importance of confidentiality and can handle sensitive information with discretion
- You work well as part of a team and across departments, you’ll collaborate with Compliance, management, and external counsel

Desirable (not essential)
- A law degree and/or legal qualification such as the LPC, SQE Part 1, or CILEx (completed or in progress). More than one year’s experience as a paralegal, ideally in a commercial law firm, in-house legal department, or a regulated industry such as energy or utilities.
