I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Role Summary
This is an experienced Technical Paraplanner position working alongside Independent Financial Advisers to develop high-quality financial plans and recommendations around individual client needs. You’ll play an important technical role within the advice process, carrying out detailed research, producing suitability documentation and using cashflow modelling to support financial planning decisions.
Importantly, this is not a trainee paraplanning or administrator-to-paraplanner step-up role. The business is looking for someone who already has hands-on paraplanning experience within an IFA environment and can contribute at a technical level from the outset.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial planning research and analysis: Support advisers in assessing client circumstances and researching appropriate strategies, giving you exposure to varied and technically engaging advice work.
- Suitability report preparation: Produce clear, accurate financial plans, suitability reports and advice documentation across new business, annual reviews and ad hoc recommendations.
- Cashflow modelling: Build and interpret cashflow models as part of the advice process, helping advisers and clients understand different financial scenarios and long-term outcomes.
- Recommendation evidence: Prepare supporting research and documentation that clearly demonstrates and justifies provider, product and planning recommendations.
- Adviser and client support: Work closely with Financial Advisers and attend client meetings where required, including presenting technical or cashflow information.
- Technical development: Maintain strong product, regulatory and financial planning knowledge while contributing to high standards across the wider team.
