JOB TITLE: Parent-Carers Project Worker (Sandwell Carers)
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Permanent
RESPONSIBLE TO: Coordinator
SALARY: £13.44 p/hour
HOURS: 18 hours per week (flexible via a rota to meet service outcomes)
WHERE: Outreach across Sandwell (Office B32 3BZ)
Essential:
Knowledge/Experience and Skills
- Experience of supporting people, families or communities, ideally through community work, outreach, health, social care, education or a similar setting.
- A good understanding of, or genuine interest in learning about, the experiences of Parent-Carers, disabled children and unpaid carers.
- Clear, friendly communication skills, with the confidence to speak with Parent-Carers, colleagues, community groups and professionals.
- Able to organise your time, keep simple records, follow agreed processes and use everyday IT such as email, Word, Teams and case management systems.
- Comfortable bringing people together through groups, workshops, activities or meetings.
- Able to work independently, use initiative and be a supportive member of a team.
- Respectful, inclusive and able to work well with people from different communities, cultures and backgrounds.
- Committed to safeguarding, confidentiality, equality and treating people with dignity.
Desirable:
- Lived experience as a Parent-Carer or unpaid carer, or experience supporting unpaid carers, disabled people or families of children with SEND.
- Knowledge of Sandwell, its communities, local services or partner organisations.
- Ability to speak another community language.

- Willing to take on other reasonable duties that fit the purpose and level of the role

We’re looking for a friendly, enthusiastic and community-minded Parent-Carers Project Worker to join our Sandwell Carers team.
This is a varied and rewarding role where you’ll spend much of your time getting out into communities, meeting Parent-Carers, building relationships and helping families caring for children with SEND, disabilities or long-term conditions get the support, information and opportunities they need.

You’ll help deliver workshops, support groups, activities and information sessions, as well as connecting Parent-Carers with other services and organisations across Sandwell.
The role would particularly suit someone who lives in, knows or has strong connections with Sandwell and its diverse communities. However, you don’t have to live in the borough. If you’re from a neighbouring area, are keen to get to know Sandwell and share our passion for supporting Parent-Carers, we’d still love to hear from you.
What will you be doing?
You’ll be part of the Midland Mencap team delivering Sandwell Carers support for Parent-Carers.
Your Role Will Include:
- Building positive and trusted relationships with Parent-Carers across Sandwell.
- Delivering friendly and accessible support groups, workshops and information sessions.
- Helping Parent-Carers understand their rights, explore their options and find the right support.
- Connecting families with local organisations, services and community opportunities.
- Listening to Parent-Carers and involving them in shaping what we offer.
- Getting out into Sandwell communities to promote the service and reach Parent-Carers who may not yet know support is available.
- Working alongside community organisations, schools, health and social care professionals and other partners.
- Helping plan activities and events that respond to what Parent-Carers tell us they need.
- Keeping straightforward records of your work and contributing to monitoring the impact of the service.
- Working safely and following Midland Mencap’s safeguarding, confidentiality and other relevant policies.
The role is flexible and varied. Some weeks may involve running a Parent-Carer group or workshop, while others might include attending a community event, meeting a local organisation, supporting an individual Parent-Carer or helping develop a new activity.

- Experience of supporting people, families or communities, such as through outreach, community work, health, social care, education or a similar setting.
- An understanding of, or genuine interest in learning about, Parent-Carers, disabled children and unpaid carers.
- The ability to organise your time, use everyday IT, keep simple records and manage a varied workload.
- Confidence bringing people together through groups, conversations, workshops or activities.
- A respectful, inclusive approach and a commitment to safeguarding, confidentiality, equality and dignity.

Because This Is a Community-based Role:

- There may occasionally be evening or weekend work depending on activities and the needs of Parent-Carers.
- The post requires an Enhanced DBS check.
- You will work flexibly across 18 hours per week as part of the wider service rota.
