Major Job Responsibilities

  • Responds to a wide range of emergency incidents to provide assistance in the rescuing, protection, and preservation of lives, property, and the environment within the Incident Command System
  • Performs fire ground operations including confining, controlling and extinguishing fires; search, rescue and evacuation of individuals; exposure protection; salvage and overhaul in accordance with departmental policies and guidelines
  • Perform a variety of rescue-related duties to protect the public and reduce further injuries related to motor vehicle accidents, high-level rescue, confined space, ice and water rescue, and industrial accidents, etc.
  • Provides emergency medical care including conducting patient assessments, obtaining vital signs, administering first aid, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and/or defibrillation, preparing patients for transport, and assisting paramedics as required
  • Drive and operate fire apparatus and support vehicles within the parameters of the Highway Traffic Act
  • Performs routine cleaning, inspection, and maintenance of stations, apparatus, and equipment to ensure operational readiness and extend service life
  • Attends and delivers public education programs and messaging at events, station tours, and community functions to promote fire safety awareness and enhance community engagement
  • Attends weekly station training and other training as required
  • Comply with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines, and the Occupational Health & Safety Act
  • Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with department objectives

Education & Experience

Education:

  • Secondary School diploma or academic equivalent is required

Preferred:

  • Pre-Service Firefighter Training and Education Certificate
  • Post-Secondary Degree or Diploma in a related field
  • Paramedic Diploma from a recognized institution or equivalent

Preferred Experience:

  • Previous or current experience as a firefighter or paramedic
  • Previous or current experience in a skilled trade or mechanical field demonstrating the ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot tools, machinery, and equipment safely and effectively

Preferred Certifications and Designations:

  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter I & II Certified (ProBoard, IFSAC or OFMEM equivalency)
  • NFPA 1072 HazMat Awareness
  • Valid “D” Driver’s License with a “Z” endorsement with satisfactory driver’s abstract
  • Fire Alarm Technician
  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification
  • Provincial designation Advanced Emergency Medical Care Attendant (AEMCA)
  • Standard First Aid
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level C

Additional Job Skills

  • Delivers exceptional customer service while consistently maintaining professionalism, integrity, and composure in all interactions
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Applicants must be capable of handling intense and sustained physical activity

General Information

  • Applicants must be a resident of Milton to apply and work for Milton Fire & Rescue Services
  • Successful candidates must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License Class “G” with a satisfactory driving record. A driver’s abstract dated within 30 days will be required for those selected. Candidates with four (4) or more active demerit points on their driving record will not be considered for this position
  • In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to submit a Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening upon employment
  • Successful candidates must undergo a medical examination as a condition of employment
  • Note: Within one year of hire, recruits must obtain the following licenses/certificates at their own expense:
    • Valid “D” Driver’s License with a “Z” endorsement
    • Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
    • Clinical Assessment
    • Acrophobia Assessment
    • National Firefighting Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Firefighter Qualifications must also be obtained within the same timeframe
