Part-Time Cleaner
School: York Steiner School
Reports To: Operations Officer
Working Hours: average 8 hours per week (flexible working arrangements can be mutually agreed)
Contract Type: All Year Round
Pay Rate: £12.71/hour
Start Date: Immediate
Job Purpose
To provide a high standard of cleaning and hygiene services throughout the school premises. The role is vital in ensuring a clean, safe, healthy, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
Daily Cleaning Routine
- Sweep, mop, vacuum across classrooms, corridors, offices, and assembly halls.
- Dust, wipe down, and polish surfaces, desks, tables, windowsills, and fixtures.
Washroom & Hygiene Maintenance
- Thoroughly clean and disinfect washrooms, toilets, sinks, and sanitary fittings.
- Replenish essential supplies including soap, hand towels, and toilet paper.
Waste & Litter Management
- Empty rubbish bins and recycling units daily, disposing of waste in designated external collection areas.
Health & Safety Compliance
- Adhere to Health & Safety policies, COSHH regulations (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health), and safe working practices at all times.
- Ensure correct and safe storage of all cleaning chemicals, tools, and equipment.
- Promptly report any maintenance issues, hazards, damaged fixtures, or safety concerns to the Operations Officer.

Periodic Deep Cleaning
- Participate in deep cleaning / light decorating activities during school holiday periods.
Person Specification & Requirements
Experience
- Previous cleaning experience in a school, commercial, or institutional environment is preferred, but full training will be provided.
Knowledge
- Basic understanding of Health & Safety standards and chemical safety (COSHH) is desirable. Training will be provided.
Skills & Attributes
- Punctual, dependable, and self-motivated with high standards of cleanliness.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a small team.
- Good communication skills and a polite, approachable manner.
- Physical Capability: Ability to perform physical tasks (bending, lifting, stretching, and standing for the duration of the shift).
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
