I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Why you're a good match
You’ve got the grades and the economics background, and your bank internship is exactly the experience this scheme looks for. Apply soon — deadlines close within the month.
Experience fit
Your summer at the bank plus your econometrics coursework map directly to the day-one responsibilities on this scheme — client modelling, market briefings, and deal support.
Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
The individual should already have a strong track record within accountancy and be credible with entrepreneurial and owner-managed businesses. Commercial ability is important. The existing leadership team has significant client responsibilities already, so this appointment isn't about finding someone to simply absorb work. The firm wants somebody who can create new opportunities, develop relationships and ultimately bring meaningful fees into the business.
You are likely to be ACA or ACCA qualified and currently operating as a Director, Partner Designate, Salaried or established senior leader within another accountancy firm.
The equity opportunity
This is where the role becomes particularly interesting. The intention is for the successful individual to demonstrate their impact during the first year and, assuming the fit and performance are right on both sides, move towards ownership rather than remaining permanently salaried. That means the opportunity in Cardiff should appeal to somebody thinking beyond their next basic salary increase.

The culture is deliberately relationship-led and face to face. The firm's clients know their advisers personally, and senior people remain visible rather than becoming names attached to engagement letters.
For an ambitious Partner who can combine fee generation with excellent client relationships, this is a rare opportunity to join an established Cardiff firm while there is still significant value left to create.
