Shape the future of a growing commercial insurance business with a strong private client and agricultural portfolio

  • Build relationships with business owners and decision-makers across Hertford and the surrounding area
  • Craft bespoke insurance solutions for commercial, high net worth and agricultural clients
  • Self-employed opportunity backed by a top 10 UK financial services provider

NFU Mutual’s agency network continues to expand, and the South East region is leading the charge. Our success is built on exceptional customer service, reflected in our 95%+ customer retention rate, and recognised by our three-time win as Which? Insurance Brand of the Year.

As a Partner in the Hertford Agency, you’ll be at the heart of a highly respected insurance business with strong roots in the local community. You’ll work with a diverse client base across commercial, high net worth and agricultural sectors, helping businesses and individuals protect what matters most while delivering the exceptional service standards that define NFU Mutual.

You’ll bring strong commercial awareness and relationship-building skills, using them to identify opportunities, grow market share and develop lasting client partnerships. As part of the agency leadership team, you’ll help shape strategy, drive business growth and play a key role in the agency’s continued success.

This is a self-employed opportunity with the backing of one of the UK’s most trusted insurers. You’ll benefit from professional development opportunities, access to specialist support and the chance to work alongside a high-performing team.

Your experience and ambitions for the future

You’ll play a pivotal role in the Hertford Agency, joining the leadership team to help shape the business and drive its future direction. We’re looking for someone with strong commercial instincts, a proven ability to build relationships and the ambition to grow a successful business.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

A significant part of the opportunity will be focused on developing commercial opportunities across the region. Working with SME, corporate and high-value clients, you’ll use your sales expertise and relationship-building skills to generate new business, strengthen existing customer relationships and expand the agency’s presence within the local market.

Alongside this commercial focus, you’ll support an established agricultural and rural portfolio, helping customers navigate an evolving business landscape. Whether working with established farming businesses, entrepreneurs or commercial organisations, you’ll build trusted partnerships that deliver long-term value for both clients and the agency.
