Passenger Assistant – Term Time Only
Location: Plymouth
Rate: £17.41 per hour (Umbrella)
Contract: Ongoing / Academic Year Contract
Hours: Approximately 10 Hours Per Week (hours may vary depending on routes and cover requirements)
Working Pattern: Part-Time, Term Time Only
DBS: Enhanced DBS with Children's Barred List Required
Pay: Bi-weekly
Summary
We are seeking compassionate and dependable Passenger Assistants to support children and young people aged 4-25 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) during their school or college commutes. As part of Plymouth's Home-to-School Transport Service, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that passengers travel safely and comfortably, providing essential support throughout their journey. This rewarding position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with children and young people, especially those with additional needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist children and young people during their transport to and from educational settings.
- Ensure the safety, welfare, and comfort of passengers at all times.
- Offer reassurance and assistance to students with SEND.
- Collaborate with drivers, schools, parents, and transport teams.
- Foster a calm, safe, and positive travel environment.
- Help students board and exit vehicles safely.
- Adhere to safeguarding and health & safety procedures.
- Provide cover for absent Passenger Assistants as needed.
- Report any concerns or incidents according to procedures.

Working Hours
This position is available during school term times only. Typical working hours include:
- Morning Routes: Approximately 7:00am – 9:30am
- Afternoon Routes: Approximately 2:30pm – 5:15pm
Coverage is generally required Monday to Friday, with hours subject to change based on route allocations and service needs.
Essential Requirements
- Genuine interest in supporting children and young people with SEND.
- Availability for both morning and afternoon routes, Monday to Friday.
- Flexibility to adapt to varying route requirements.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Reliable, patient, and caring demeanor.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities.
Mandatory Requirements
- Enhanced DBS Check including the Children's Barred List.
- Must reside within Plymouth City boundaries or be able to travel independently to a designated vehicle pick-up point within Plymouth.
- Availability during term time working patterns.

Training
Comprehensive training will be provided before starting. Ongoing support and guidance will be available throughout the assignment.
