Job Title: Patent Attorney
Our client is an established intellectual property firm with a strong reputation for handling technically complex work for major international clients. The chemistry team is continuing to grow and is looking to appoint a Patent Attorney with experience across pharmaceutical and broader chemical subject matter. The firm offers exposure to high quality work alongside an experienced team, with the opportunity to take on increasing responsibility as your career develops.
Responsibilities
- Advise pharmaceutical and chemical clients across a varied patent portfolio
- Draft and prosecute UK, European and international patent applications
- Work with clients on patent strategy and portfolio development
- Support contentious matters including oppositions, appeals and patent litigation
- Analyse complex chemical and pharmaceutical inventions and assess their patentability
- Work closely with inventors, research teams and other technical specialists
- Assist with developing and implementing patent filing and prosecution strategies
- Manage a varied caseload while maintaining high standards of technical and legal accuracy
- Contribute to client relationships and provide commercially focused advice
- Work collaboratively with attorneys and wider teams on complex matters

- Degree or equivalent academic background in Chemistry or a closely related discipline
- Experience working as a Patent Attorney within chemistry and/or pharmaceuticals
- Approximately two years' professional experience at the lower end, through to around two years post UK and/or European qualification
- Meaningful experience handling oppositions, appeals and/or patent litigation
- Meaningful experience advising pharmaceutical clients, ideally with a significant proportion of your work relating to patents protecting drug products
- Candidates do not need to meet every element of the brief, but should have strong experience in at least one of these areas, with two or more particularly desirable
- Strong technical understanding and the ability to work confidently with complex chemical subject matter
- Excellent drafting, analytical and communication skills
- Commercial awareness and a client focused approach
- Ability to manage competing deadlines and take ownership of a varied caseload
- A collaborative approach and genuine interest in developing within a specialist chemistry practice
