Payroll Accounts Assistant

The Payroll Accounts Assistant is responsible for supporting the accurate and timely processing of payroll and assisting with day-to-day accounting functions. The role ensures employees are paid correctly, payroll records are maintained, and financial data is processed in compliance with company policies and UK legislation. The role also supports the smooth operation of the accounts payable function and plays a key part in maintaining strong supplier relationships.

Payroll Duties

  • Assist in the preparation and processing of weekly and monthly payroll
  • Calculate employee wages, overtime, bonuses, commissions, and statutory deductions
  • Process statutory payments including SSP, SMP, SPP, and tax adjustments
  • Support pension auto-enrolment administration
  • Respond to employee queries relating to pay, deductions, and payslips
  • Ensure payroll deadlines are met consistently

Accounts Support

  • Assist with invoice processing and data entry into accounting systems
  • Reconcile payroll transactions with general ledger accounts
  • Support accounts payable and receivable tasks
  • Prepare basic financial and payroll reports for management
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes

Compliance & Administration

  • Ensure compliance with HMRC regulations and company policies
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive payroll and financial information
  • Support audits by providing payroll and financial documentation
  • Keep up to date with changes in payroll legislation and procedures

Team & Administrative Support

  • Support general finance administration tasks as needed

Essential

  • Strong numerical and analytical skills
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Excel and accounting systems
  • Ability to handle confidential information professionally
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal

Desirable

  • Experience in payroll or finance administration
  • Knowledge of payroll software (e.g. Sage)
  • Basic understanding of UK payroll legislation
  • AAT qualification or working towards it
