About the role
We are looking for an accurate, organised and customer-focused Payroll Administrator to support our busy Direct Payments payroll service. You will help deliver timely and compliant payroll services for individual employers and Personal Assistants, while providing helpful support by telephone and email.
This is a varied role for someone who is confident managing end-to-end payroll tasks, maintaining clear records and working with employers, service users, HMRC and pension providers.
Key responsibilities
- Set up and maintain payroll records for employers, including HMRC registrations, employment information, pension arrangements and payroll files.
- Accurately process weekly and monthly payroll data, including pay, tax, National Insurance, pensions, holiday pay, statutory payments, expenses and deductions.
- Produce and distribute payslips and complete payroll year-end processes and statutory documentation.
- Administer monthly pension contributions and payments through NEST, manage auto-enrolment requirements and submit pension declarations by statutory deadlines.
- Prepare and submit HMRC documentation, including RTI submissions, reports and year-end returns.
- Respond to payroll and finance-related telephone calls, emails and enquiries, providing guidance within agreed boundaries.
- Maintain accurate records for audits and local authority reporting, and support payroll-related invoicing and payment monitoring.
- Work closely with colleagues across Payroll, Direct Payments, Holding Accounts and Finance to maintain an accurate and responsive service.

About you
You will have:
- At least two years' experience working in a busy payroll environment.
- Experience of end-to-end payroll processing.
- Working knowledge of HMRC regulations and payroll systems.
- Strong accuracy, attention to detail and organisational skills.
- Confidence using payroll and finance systems, Excel and digital filing tools.
- A clear understanding of confidentiality and data protection.
- The ability to manage your workload proactively and effectively within a part-time role.
- A commitment to equality, inclusion and the rights of disabled people and carers.
Experience using BrightPay, Xero or NEST, working in a payroll bureau or Direct Payments environment, producing payroll or financial reports, or working in a charity or social enterprise would be desirable.
