Play a key role in delivering an accurate, efficient and reliable payroll service, supporting approximately 1,800 colleagues across our UK business.

The opportunity

We are looking for an experienced, detail-oriented and customer-focused Payroll Advisor to join our Payroll team at our Head Office in Ibstock, Leicestershire (LE67 6HS).

Working as part of a small, collaborative team, you will help deliver an accurate, timely and compliant payroll service for approximately 1,800 colleagues across our UK locations. You will take responsibility for a range of payroll activities, from processing employee pay and managing payroll changes through to responding to colleague queries and ensuring compliance with payroll legislation.

Working closely with colleagues across Employee Services, People Systems and Finance, you will play an important role in maintaining an efficient and reliable payroll service, while identifying opportunities to improve processes and ways of working.

What you'll do

  • Process monthly payroll activities for approximately 1,800 colleagues, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time.
  • Administer payroll changes across the employee lifecycle, including starters, leavers, salary adjustments, contractual changes and other payroll amendments.
  • Calculate and process pay adjustments, statutory payments, deductions, payroll taxes and other payroll-related transactions.
  • Respond to payroll queries from employees and managers, providing clear, accurate advice and delivering a professional service within agreed timescales.
  • Prepare, validate and process payroll payments, including BACS submissions and payments to HMRC and third-party providers.
  • Complete regular payroll checks, reconciliations and reporting to maintain accuracy and ensure compliance with internal controls.
  • Support payroll month-end and year-end activities, including statutory submissions, reconciliations and reporting requirements.
  • Work closely with Finance colleagues to reconcile payroll information and support general ledger reporting.
  • Administer the payrolling of benefits in kind, ensuring the correct treatment of taxable benefits.
  • Support payroll system updates, annual legislative changes, testing and implementation activities.
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and ensure processes comply with relevant legislation, data protection requirements and Company policies.
  • Keep up to date with changes to UK payroll legislation, HMRC requirements and regulatory guidance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes, strengthen controls and introduce more efficient and digitally enabled ways of working.
  • Build strong working relationships across the business, providing a responsive and reliable payroll service to colleagues and managers.

What you'll bring

  • Previous experience working in a UK payroll environment, with a good understanding of end-to-end payroll processing.
  • Sound knowledge of UK payroll legislation, statutory payments, PAYE, National Insurance and payroll compliance requirements.
  • Experience of processing payroll changes, deductions, adjustments and statutory payments.
  • Excellent attention to detail, with a strong focus on accuracy and data quality.
  • Strong organisational and planning skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet critical payroll deadlines.
  • A customer-focused approach, with the confidence to respond to payroll queries and explain payroll matters clearly.
  • Good numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues across different functions.
  • Experience of using payroll systems and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • A proactive and flexible approach, with a willingness to support colleagues and contribute to continuous improvement.

It would be great if you also have

  • A CIPP qualification or equivalent professional payroll qualification.
  • Experience of using Zellis ResourceLink payroll software.
  • Experience of processing payroll within a large or multi-site organisation.
  • Knowledge of payroll year-end processes, general ledger reconciliations and the payrolling of benefits in kind.
  • Experience of supporting payroll system improvements, automation or process changes.
