Contract: Permanent
Middlemore has been retained on a confidential search for an established consulting firm looking to appoint a Payroll Consulting Lead specialising in Global Payroll Transformation.
This is a senior client facing position for someone who understands payroll in depth but has moved beyond purely operational delivery.

Previous external payroll consulting experience is essential for this position.
The Role
You will lead client assignments across a broad range of payroll change and transformation activity. Depending on the engagement, this could involve assessing an existing payroll environment, defining future requirements, supporting technology or provider change, leading implementation activity or helping an organisation improve the effectiveness of an existing payroll model.
Typical responsibilities will include:
- Leading complex UK and international payroll transformation assignments
- Managing client projects from initial discovery through to delivery
- Assessing payroll processes and identifying opportunities for improvement
- Supporting organisations through significant technology and service change
- Leading multi country implementation and transition activity
- Managing programme plans, risks, dependencies and senior stakeholders
- Working across Payroll, HR, Finance and Technology functions
- Providing practical advice to senior client stakeholders

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

This is not a BAU payroll management position. It is a consulting role requiring someone who can understand a client's problem, challenge their thinking, recommend an appropriate approach and then help deliver the solution.

You do not need to specialise in one particular payroll platform. Broader experience across different technologies, providers and international payroll environments would be beneficial.
The Opportunity
What makes this particularly interesting is the opportunity to join an organisation that is investing significantly in its payroll transformation capability.
There is already client demand and a strong pipeline of work, but there is also considerable scope for the successful individual to influence how the offering develops.
You will be given the autonomy to lead client relationships and complex assignments while working alongside experienced transformation professionals.
There is also a clear opportunity to become involved in broader activities including developing client solutions, supporting new opportunities, mentoring colleagues and helping grow the payroll capability over time.
For someone currently working within a large consultancy or specialist payroll advisory environment who wants greater ownership, broader exposure and the opportunity to make a visible impact, this could be a very compelling next move.
Middlemore is committed to equal opportunities and welcomes applications from all suitably qualified candidates, regardless of age, disability, gender, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation.
“It took my CV and asked me questions relevant to understanding what kind of jobs to suggest for me. Suggestions were almost perfect. Jobs were exactly what I’ve been looking for.”
