About The Role
We are seeking an experienced Payroll Service Manager to join our team, reporting directly to the Head of Payroll Service & Delivery. This pivotal role involves leading the Payroll Service Team to provide a seamless and high-quality payroll experience for our employees across ISS. The successful candidate will take ownership of managing daily payroll queries, ensuring timely resolution within agreed service level agreements (SLAs), and escalating issues when necessary. This role requires a hands-on leader who can foster a high-performance team environment, work collaboratively with internal departments including Payroll, People & Culture (P&C), and Finance, and coordinate effectively with external payroll partners such as SD Worx. The Payroll Service Manager will play a key role in process improvement initiatives, trend analysis, and maintaining payroll controls to uphold compliance and accuracy. Additionally, this role offers an opportunity to influence the ongoing development of payroll services, contribute to strategic initiatives, and support the professional growth of team members.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in UK payroll operations, complemented by excellent customer service and leadership skills. Essential qualifications include a minimum of five years’ payroll experience with a comprehensive understanding of UK payroll legislation. Prior experience managing or leading payroll processing teams in both in-house and outsourced environments is highly desirable. Advanced proficiency in Excel and familiarity with payroll systems and IT platforms are required. Knowledge of Time & Attendance (T&A) processes and GDPR/data privacy regulations will be advantageous. A professional qualification such as CIPP or equivalent experience is preferred. The candidate should demonstrate exceptional communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities, with the confidence to manage multiple stakeholders and complex payroll issues effectively.
Responsibilities
- Lead, support, and develop the Payroll Service Team to foster a motivated, engaged, and high-performing environment.
- Oversee the management and allocation of payroll queries, ensuring timely responses and resolutions within established SLAs.
- Serve as a key escalation point for complex or sensitive payroll issues, providing expert guidance and resolution.
- Monitor service performance metrics, working closely with senior payroll leadership to maintain and improve SLAs and overall service quality.
- Analyze recurring issues and trends, collaborating with the wider payroll team to identify root causes and implement effective solutions that enhance the employee experience.
- Maintain and contribute to payroll processes and controls, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and company policies.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders across P&C, Finance, Risk & Audit, and senior management, as well as with external payroll partners such as SD Worx, to ensure seamless service delivery.
- Support the training, coaching, and development of team members through regular one-on-one meetings, performance reviews, and development plans.
- Participate in succession planning initiatives and contribute to the continuous improvement of payroll services, leveraging feedback and industry best practices.
