Payroll Manager
Location: UK
Contract: 3-month contract
Working Pattern: Remote
Start: ASAP
We are supporting a well-established organisation that is looking for an experienced Payroll Manager to join the People team on an immediate contract basis.
This is an important role within a period of change, as payroll is moving into the People function. You will take ownership of the day-to-day management and delivery of a UK payroll of approximately 900 employees, working closely with an established outsourced payroll provider.
The ideal person will be confident managing a sizeable payroll, highly organised and comfortable working independently. You’ll need to be able to quickly understand existing processes, build relationships with key stakeholders and ensure payroll continues to run accurately and smoothly throughout the transition.
The Role
As Payroll Manager, you will act as the key link between People Operations, Finance, employees and the external payroll provider, ensuring payroll is accurate, compliant and delivered on time every month.
You will manage the payroll cycle from input through to validation and sign-off, while providing guidance on payroll queries, reconciliations, reporting and controls.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the accurate and timely delivery of the monthly UK payroll for approximately 900 employees through an outsourced payroll provider.
- Act as the primary day-to-day contact for the payroll provider, managing deadlines, service levels, queries and escalations.
- Prepare, review and submit accurate payroll inputs, including starters, leavers, contractual changes, absence, variable pay and other employee changes.
- Thoroughly validate payroll outputs and support the monthly sign-off process.
- Review gross-to-net calculations, statutory deductions, pension contributions and payroll exceptions.
- Complete payroll reconciliations, reporting, journals and supporting audit evidence.
- Ensure payroll activity complies with UK employment legislation, HMRC requirements, PAYE, National Insurance and workplace pension obligations.
- Respond to payroll queries from employees, managers, People Operations and Finance in a professional and timely manner.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
