Payroll Manager
Hybrid – 3 days per week in the office
We’re partnering with a well-known, large-scale UK organisation to recruit an experienced Payroll Manager into its established in-house payroll function.
This is a newly upgraded role with responsibility for the operational delivery of payroll, combining hands-on UK payroll expertise, team leadership, systems ownership, and continuous improvement.
You’ll work closely with the Head of Payroll and lead a team of six.
The role
You’ll take ownership of the day-to-day payroll operation, ensuring payroll is delivered accurately, compliantly, and on time. Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading, managing, and developing a team of six, driving performance, accountability, and capability.
- Overseeing end-to-end UK payroll processing, controls, reconciliations, BACS, and third-party payments.
- Acting as the escalation point for complex payroll queries and technical issues.
- Managing year-end activities including P60s, P11Ds, and PSA.
- Owning payroll controls, compliance, and operational procedures.
- Driving process improvements, standardisation, and greater efficiency across the payroll function.
- Managing payroll systems, upgrades, testing, integrations, and technical change.
- Working closely with HR, Reward, HR Systems, and Finance.
- Supporting audits, HMRC reviews, and wider compliance activity.

You’ll ideally bring:
- Significant end-to-end UK payroll experience within a sizeable, complex in-house environment.
- Proven experience managing and developing payroll teams – people leadership is a key part of this hire.
- Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation, PAYE, NI, pensions, and statutory payments.
- Experience working with a major payroll system; ResourceLink would be highly advantageous but isn’t essential.
- Strong systems knowledge, ideally including upgrades, testing, and payroll change.
- Experience within retail or another high-volume environment would be beneficial but isn’t essential.
- A confident, hands-on approach with the ability to manage stakeholders and improve processes.
