Job Title
Are you an experienced Payroll Officer who is comfortable managing a large monthly payroll and enjoys working in a busy operational environment?
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Payroll Specialist to join a well-established business in Wrexham. This is an important role within the HR team, responsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll for around 500 employees across hourly paid and salaried positions.
This is not a small payroll. You will need to have previous experience managing a significant employee population and be confident dealing with a payroll that includes overtime, time and attendance, shift payments, sickness, maternity, statutory payments, and other variable pay elements.
Responsibilities
- Managing the end-to-end monthly payroll process for approximately 500 employees
- Processing payroll accurately and within strict deadlines
- Managing payroll for both hourly paid and salaried employees
- Processing new starters, leavers, salary changes, promotions, transfers, and contractual amendments
- Processing variable payroll information including overtime, shift payments, allowances, bonuses, attendance, absence, and other payments
- Working closely with operational and production teams to validate timesheets, attendance records, overtime, and working hours
- Using time and attendance information to ensure payroll is processed accurately
- Processing statutory payments including SSP, SMP, SPP, and other applicable payments
- Managing PAYE, National Insurance, pension contributions, student loans, and other statutory deductions
- Administering workplace pension processes including enrolments, opt-outs, and contribution changes
- Completing payroll checks, reconciliations, and validation before payroll is finalised
- Investigating and resolving payroll discrepancies
- Producing payroll reports and providing accurate information to HR, Finance, and management
- Liaising with HMRC, pension providers, and payroll system providers where required
- Maintaining accurate payroll records and ensuring all employee information is handled confidentially
- Supporting month-end and year-end payroll activities

Requirements
- Strong experience of monthly payroll processing
- Good working knowledge of UK PAYE, National Insurance, and statutory payroll requirements
- Experience processing overtime, shift payments, allowances, absence, and other variable pay
- Strong experience using payroll and HR systems, ideally Sage
- Excellent Excel skills, including formulas, sorting, filtering, and analysing data
- Experience working with time and attendance systems
- Strong payroll reconciliation and data validation skills
- Strong numerical and analytical skills
- The ability to investigate and resolve discrepancies
- Experience administering workplace pensions and auto-enrolment
- A good understanding of UK payroll legislation and statutory payments
- The ability to work to strict deadlines while maintaining accuracy
- Excellent communication skills and the confidence to work with employees, managers, HR, and Finance

Salary and Benefits
- Salary: Depending on experience
- Hours: 37.5 hours per week, with an early finish on a Friday
- Working arrangement: Fully site-based
