The Opportunity

We are looking for a Payroll Officer to join our Human Resources team and help deliver an accurate, efficient and reliable payroll service for Barnsley College. You will play an important role in ensuring employees are paid correctly and on time, while making sure statutory, pension and contractual requirements are met.

Working as part of the Payroll and wider HR team, you will support the processing and checking of payrolls, undertake reconciliations and statutory payments, and help maintain effective administrative and financial systems. You will also prepare financial and statistical information and provide payroll guidance to colleagues on areas including sickness, maternity, tax, National Insurance, redundancy and other pay-related queries.

You will also support the administration of pension schemes, including liaising with pension providers and providing employees with relevant information and guidance. This is a varied opportunity where your accuracy and payroll knowledge will help ensure an effective service for colleagues across the College.

Above all, you will bring a professional and collaborative approach to the role, using your initiative while working effectively as part of the wider HR team.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
