Your new company
Hays are currently recruiting for an experienced Payroll Specialist to support an organisation on an urgent interim basis. This is an initial 8-week assignment, with the possibility of extension, and would suit someone who is immediately available or available at short notice. The successful candidate must have previous experience working within either a payroll bureau or an outsourced payroll environment. The organisation uses Cintra as its fully outsourced payroll provider, so experience in a similar outsourced model would be highly advantageous.

- Setting up new starters accurately, including processing new starter forms and checking employee information.
- Gathering and consolidating employee hours to support accurate payroll processing.
- Processing leavers, including final payments, accurately and on time.
- Updating employee records for job changes and ensuring pay adjustments are processed correctly.
- Administering statements of payment to employees in a timely manner.

- Producing reports and carrying out data analysis to support monthly payroll sign-off.
- Identifying opportunities to improve payroll processes and increase efficiency.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
