Payroll Specialist Lead
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Payroll Specialist Lead based in United Kingdom.
Join a global Payroll Operations team and take ownership of end-to-end payroll delivery for your assigned country.
You’ll serve as a subject matter expert, ensuring payroll accuracy, compliance, timely processing, and strong data quality.
The role combines hands-on payroll expertise with process improvement, performance management, and stakeholder collaboration.
You’ll work closely with teams across Finance, Payroll Implementation, Product, and Engineering in a highly international environment.
As a lead, you’ll also mentor payroll specialists and provide operational support to regional managers when needed.
The culture is remote-first and largely asynchronous, giving you the autonomy to organize your work around your life.

Accountabilities
- Own and execute end-to-end payroll processing for the assigned country, including statutory filings, exceptions, approvals, payments, and compliance requirements.
- Act as the country payroll subject matter expert, ensuring payroll practices remain accurate, compliant, and aligned with local requirements.
- Maintain high standards of data integrity, payroll accuracy, and quality throughout the payroll cycle.
- Prepare and manage payroll journals and reconciliations, investigating discrepancies and ensuring accurate financial reporting.
- Monitor and deliver against key KPIs and SLAs, identifying risks and taking proactive corrective action.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders across Payroll Implementation, Finance, Product, Engineering, and other relevant teams.
- Identify opportunities to improve, automate, and streamline payroll processes, increasing productivity and operational efficiency.
- Mentor, support, and share knowledge with payroll specialists to strengthen team capabilities and performance.
- Provide backup support to regional managers during periods of absence and contribute to broader payroll operations initiatives.

Requirements
- Demonstrated experience managing end-to-end payroll processing, either in-house or within a payroll service provider environment.
- Strong knowledge of payroll best practices, compliance principles, and payroll operations.
- Experience with French payroll processing from end to end.
- Experience using Silae payroll software is required or highly relevant to the role.
- Proficiency with productivity and data tools such as Excel and Google Workspace.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a structured approach to identifying and resolving payroll issues.
- A continuous-improvement mindset and enthusiasm for finding ways to make processes faster, more efficient, and more scalable.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, international, fully remote environment and collaborate effectively across distributed teams.
- Comfortable working largely asynchronously, with a high degree of autonomy, ownership, and proactive communication.
- Fluent written and spoken English and French.
- Previous remote-work experience is a plus, but not mandatory.
- Strong mentoring, communication, stakeholder-management, and organizational skills.
