SUBCONTRACTOR OPPORTUNITY
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Practitioner
PAY RATE - £20-£35 per hour, based on qualifications, credentials and experience
ENGAGEMENT - Self-employed subcontracting opportunity - not an employee position. Hours are offered as suitable client work becomes available
CLIENTS - Children and young adults aged 4-25 years
SETTING - Services are delivered within an educational framework, primarily in clients’ homes and in community settings where appropriate
SUPERVISION - Provided by a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) and/or UK Behaviour Analyst (Cert)
TRAVEL - Driving is an essential part of the role, as clients are based across Suffolk. Mileage is billable at £0.45 per mile
Purpose of the Role
To deliver high-quality PBS to children and young adults aged 4-25 years within an educational framework, primarily in clients’ homes and in community settings where appropriate. The practitioner will implement skill-building interventions designed and overseen by a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) and/or UK Behaviour Analyst (Cert), supporting each client to increase their independence, engagement, communication, social skills, and emotional regulation whilst reducing behaviours that negatively impact learning and wellbeing.
Person specification
Essential criteria
- Experience working with children/young people who have Special Educational Needs (SEN), requiring PBS input, and skills teaching programmes.
- Training or demonstrable understanding of PBS principles.
- A qualification, certification or recognised credential in PBS or ABA.
- Willingness to receive BCBA supervision and ongoing professional development.
- Registered Behaviour Technician (RBT) credential OR interest in working towards RBT certification, or UKSBA equivalent.
- Ability to remain calm, consistent, and child-centred under pressure.
- Demonstrate highly developed interpersonal skills, i.e., ability to talk effectively to children, parents, colleagues and school staff (SENCO, teachers, teaching assistants).
- Excellent data collection skills.
- Experience working within a multidisciplinary team.
- Valid and current professional indemnity and liability insurance.
- A full driver’s licence and independent means of transport. Driving is an essential part of the role, as clients are based across Suffolk.
- Satisfactory enhanced DBS check.

- Experience implementing behaviour support plans under BCBA or psychologist supervision.
- Experience implementing skills-based curriculums.
- Experience conducting functional communication training.
- Understanding of neurodiversity-affirming practice.
- A master’s degree in PBS, ABA or a closely related field.
Job description
1. Direct support
- Deliver consistent 1:1 PBS sessions for the required funded hours per case, primarily in the child or young person’s home. Sessions may also take place in a school or community setting where appropriate and arranged.
- Implement behaviour support plans, skill-building targets, and proactive strategies designed by the supervising BCBA.
- Use least-intrusive strategies, reinforcing positive behaviours and promoting functional communication and skill acquisition.
- If applicable, support participation in class activities, transitions, and peer interactions.
- Assist with environmental modifications or task adaptations, as guided by the BCBA.

2. Behaviour monitoring & data collection
- Collect accurate, real-time data on target behaviours and skill acquisition.
- Record ABC data, frequency/duration counts, and trial-by-trial or session summaries, as required.
- Complete a session note following each session, describing progress towards the client’s goals.
- Communicate any immediate concerns or behavioural escalations to the BCBA in a timely manner.
3. Collaboration and communication
- Work collaboratively with parents and, where applicable, school staff, SENCOs, teachers, and teaching assistants.
- Participate in regular supervision meetings with the BCBA.
- Provide clear, professional feedback about progress, barriers, and contextual factors affecting the child’s day.
4. Safeguarding & professional conduct
- Uphold safeguarding policies and report any concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
- Maintain professionalism, reliability, and consistency to support the child’s stability and routine.
