The South East Regional Prison Intelligence Team (SERPIT)
The South East Regional Prison Intelligence Team (SERPIT) is responsible for gathering and developing intelligence from HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) and other associated establishments relating to national security issues and organised crime.
Role Overview
Prison Intelligence Officers (PIOs) who are expected to work within regional establishments. Working alongside HMPPS, they identify and exploit intelligence opportunities with a view of mitigating risk and disrupting offenders.
We now have an opportunity for a PC PIO to join our team. This post will work in and with prisons in the South East and it will require the candidate to be able to travel to different locations across Surrey.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will develop and maintain effective working relationships with Counter Terrorism Units and other partner agencies, tasked with the investigation of matters affecting National Security across the South East Region.
Requirements
To be successful in this post, you must have:
- Excellent communication/interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Ability to gather and accurately record information effectively
- Recognition of sensitive information
- Maintenance of discretion, confidentiality, and risk management
The successful candidates will have completed the Operational Partnership Team “Working in Prisons National Course” and National Prison Debriefing course or be willing and able to undertake training.

You will be asked to demonstrate flexibility regarding working hours in line with operational demand and occasionally this may require working away from home. For this reason a full UK Driving Licence is essential to the role.
Security Requirements
Due to the nature of our work, security is of paramount importance to us and therefore it will be necessary to pass and maintain vetting level SC together with a number of enhanced security checks. In order to achieve this, you must be a British National and have resided in the UK for the past five years. Exemptions may apply for overseas or other diplomatic service (with HM Government), and studying abroad. Please be aware that if successful there are limitations on travelling to a small number of countries once in post.

- Hampshire officers need to complete an AD277b alongside their application. This form is not available on the force’s standard forms library. It can be found on the HR Portal. Please contact WFPlanning@hampshire.police.uk if you have any queries relating to this.
- Kent Officers will need to inform Kent HR Resource Planning at the earliest opportunity of intention to apply. Every Officer application form must be signed by the Chief Supt or police staff equivalent and sent to Kent HR Resource Planning no later than 5 working days prior to closing date unless exceptional circumstances apply. This is required so that Chief Officer approval can be obtained for the application to progress, which will be managed by Kent HR Resource Planning. These steps must be completed prior to submission application. If your application for an opportunity is not approved prior to submission to the recruiting organisation you may not be supported for release to the role, should you be successful.
