Location - Bristol

Self-Shooting PD, ‘Fake or Fortune?’ – Series 15, BBC Studios, Bristol.

Contract Dates: 19th of October 2026 – 30th of April 2027

Base: Bristol (Hybrid working with an office presence of a minimum of 3 days a week)

Closing Date: 13th of September 2026

The role is offered as a freelance contract.

Fake or Fortune? is a thrilling, investigative art history detective story which endeavours to uncover the truth about mysterious works of art and other treasures.

The series films across the UK and internationally, following complex investigations that combine rigorous research, compelling storytelling and high-quality filmmaking.

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Shooting PD to join our new series in Bristol.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a creative and editorially strong filmmaker to help deliver compelling stories for one of the BBC's most successful arts programmes.

We are looking for a narrative-driven PD with strong shooting skills and a proven ability to craft engaging stories from development through to delivery. The successful candidate will be comfortable filming in a range of environments, working with contributors and experts, and handling archive-rich stories that require careful editorial judgement and visual flair.

Responsibilities Include

  • Developing and producing compelling, narrative-led stories from research through to final delivery.
  • Shooting high-quality interviews, actuality and location sequences in the UK and internationally.
  • Working closely with presenters, contributors, experts and institutions to bring investigations to life on screen.
  • Identifying strong visual storytelling opportunities and translating complex research into accessible and engaging content.
  • Directing contributors on location and ensuring editorial objectives are achieved during filming.
  • Working with archive and third-party copyright material, incorporating it creatively and compliantly into programme storytelling.
  • Collaborating closely with editors during post-production to shape engaging and coherent narratives.
  • Writing briefs, scripts and edit notes to support programme production and delivery.
  • Liaising with production management to ensure filming is delivered efficiently and within budget.
  • Ensuring all content complies with BBC editorial, legal and compliance guidelines.
  • Supporting filming both within the UK and overseas as required.

Required Experience

  • Significant experience as a Shooting Producer/Director on factual, specialist factual, arts, history or documentary programming.
  • Strong shooting skills and confidence filming in a variety of locations and production environments.
  • Proven experience delivering narrative-driven stories with strong editorial structure and storytelling.
  • Experience working with third-party copyright and archive material, including integrating archive effectively within programme narratives.
  • Excellent scriptwriting and storytelling skills and ability to adapt to changing research developments.
  • Strong contributor management and interviewing experience.
  • Experience working collaboratively with editors to shape stories through post-production.
  • Strong editorial judgement and attention to detail.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • Willingness and availability to undertake UK and international travel.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively within a moving, complex, deadline driven production environment.

Desirable Experience

  • An interest in art, history, investigative storytelling or specialist factual programming.
  • Experience filming internationally.
