Role Description
The Peer Recovery Specialist Intern role is an on-site internship located in South Reston. Interns will support participants by offering peer-to-peer encouragement, sharing appropriate lived experience, and helping individuals identify and work toward their recovery, personal, and career goals.

Responsibilities:
Get help with your application

- Assisting with intake and orientation
- Facilitating or co-facilitating group sessions
- Supporting individualized recovery and goal plans
- Connecting participants with internal and community resources
- Documenting interactions in accordance with program guidelines
- Collaborating with staff on care coordination
- Participating in supervision and training to strengthen recovery-oriented and trauma-informed practices
This role is designed to build foundational skills in peer support, professional communication, and recovery services within a structured, supportive environment.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated lived experience with recovery, resilience, or overcoming significant life challenges, and a commitment to using that experience to support others.
- Strong interpersonal and communication abilities, including active listening, empathy, and the capacity to build trust with diverse participants.
- Organizational and documentation skills, with attention to detail and the ability to follow program procedures and maintain confidentiality.
- Interest in peer support, mental health, substance use recovery, or human services; prior volunteer or work experience in a helping role is beneficial.
- Ability to work on-site in South Reston, collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, and respond professionally to feedback and supervision.
- Basic computer skills for maintaining records and communicating with staff; familiarity with virtual platforms is a plus.
- Reliable attendance, personal accountability, and a willingness to learn and adhere to ethical standards and boundaries in peer support roles.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred; current enrollment or interest in social work, psychology, counseling, or related fields is an advantage.
