Do you thrive in a busy environment? Are you looking to build your HR knowledge across the employee lifecycle? Would you like to make a real difference to the experience our colleagues have at work?

About us

At the Science Museum Group (SMG), we inspire futures by encouraging people of all ages to explore and engage with science, technology, engineering and maths through our world-class collections, museums and award-winning exhibitions. We deliver this through our people and our People & Culture department is committed to creating a workplace where colleagues feel empowered, engaged and proud to belong.

We are currently looking for two People Assistants to join our People Support Team on a full-time basis working 35 hours per week. We have one permanent and one 2-year Fixed Term opportunity. This role is based at the National Railway Museum in York with hybrid working also available.

About the role

As a People Assistant, you'll be part of our national People team, helping colleagues, candidates and managers get the support they need at important moments in their working lives. This is a busy, varied and rewarding role where your care, accuracy and judgement will make a real difference to the experience people have with us.

You'll often be the first person colleagues contact when they have a question, so we're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys providing excellent customer service and wants to do the right thing for people. You'll ensure you understand what is needed, and work through sometimes complex queries to find practical, thoughtful solutions.

This role offers hybrid working, with Wednesdays and Thursdays based at the National Railway Museum in York and the remainder of the week working from home.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
