About the Independent Federation for Safeguarding
The Independent Federation for Safeguarding (IfS) is a professional body dedicated to empowering those who protect children, young people and adults. IfS was founded to ensure every individual with safeguarding responsibilities—particularly Designated Safeguarding Leads, Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads and Designated Safeguarding Officers—has the knowledge, skills, and support they need to protect children, young people and adults effectively. We provide training, supervision and support for our members.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated People and Culture (HR) Intern (Volunteer) to join our team for an initial six-month internship. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop practical experience in human resources, people management and organisational culture within a values-led safeguarding environment.
The successful candidate will gain exposure to a broad range of People and Culture activities and will have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the development of our organisation.
About the role
The People and Culture (HR) Intern will provide practical support across a range of HR and people-related activities. Working closely with colleagues across the organisation, the intern will help ensure that our people processes are effective, inclusive, well organised and aligned with our values.
This is a developmental role, and we recognise that the successful candidate may not have experience in every area of HR. We are looking for someone who is curious, organised, willing to learn and passionate about creating positive experiences for colleagues.
The internship will provide an opportunity to develop knowledge and practical skills across areas including recruitment, onboarding, employee engagement, learning and development, HR administration, policies and organisational culture.
There may be an opportunity to extend the internship beyond the initial six-month period, subject to organisational needs, performance and funding.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
