THE TEAM

We're seeking a People & Culture apprentice to learn how People operations and payroll function within a modern engineering business. You'll get practical experience across the employee life cycle while working towards a recognised Human Resources qualification.

This is a structured apprenticeship offering meaningful responsibilities from day one, supported by an experienced team and dedicated weekly study time.

SCOPE OF ROLE

HR operations support:

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date employee records on Hi Bob (Bob), our People & Culture information system
  • Support the employee life cycle: processing new starters, changes, and leavers, including right to work checks and contract paperwork
  • Monitor absence, holiday, and other leave records
  • Respond to first-line HR queries from employees and managers, escalating anything more complex to the wider team
  • Help prepare offer letters, contracts, and other employment documentation
  • Support with keeping policies, SOP’s, and the employee handbook accurate and accessible
  • Assist with filing and record-keeping in line with UK GDPR and our data retention rules

Payroll support:

  • Support the weekly and monthly payroll cycle: collating time sheets, overtime, deductions, and other variable pay information
  • Help process starters, leavers, and changes to pay, tax codes, and benefits
  • Assist with checking payroll reports and resolving straightforward payroll queries
  • Support statutory reporting, such as pension auto-enrollment and HMRC submissions, under supervision
  • Learn how UK payroll legislation applies in practice, including National Minimum/Living Wage, tax, and National Insurance rules
  • Gain exposure into processing international Payrolls

  • Take part in People & Culture projects as they come up, such as engagement surveys or process improvements
  • Attend and complete all required apprenticeship training, coursework, and assessments

What We're Looking For

Essential:

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in Math’s Grade 6/B or above and English 5/C or above
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy when working with numbers and data
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, or a willingness to learn quickly
  • Clear communicator who is comfortable handling confidential and sensitive information appropriately
  • Well organised, with the ability to manage a varied workload and meet deadlines
  • A genuine interest in building a career in Human Resources or payroll
  • Eligible to work in the UK and able to commit to the full length of the apprenticeship

Desirable:

  • Some office, administration, or customer service experience (part-time work, work experience, or volunteering all count)
  • An interest in the engineering, construction, or infrastructure sector
  • Awareness of Human Resources or payroll systems (for example Hi Bob, Sage, or Xero), training will be provided
