Job Vacancy: Trading Performance Analyst

We have a vacancy for an applied analytics specialist to join our team based in Oxford. This role will solve real-world electricity trading and optimization problems across the domains of Habitat Energy energy trading, data science, and renewable energy management. Your role here should give you the satisfaction of seeing your ideas and solutions result in better outcomes for clients, the company, and the climate. Responsibilities

Commercial Performance Analysis:

  • Analyse Habitat trading activities and profitability across day-ahead, intraday, Balancing Mechanism (BM), and associated bidding in ancillary service markets
  • Assess the effectiveness of trading strategies and identify areas for improvement; collaborating with traders and data scientists to design and optimize strategies
  • Provide insight and reporting on market trends, trading outcomes, and competitor behaviour
  • Develop and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure and investigate performance

Market Analysis:

  • Explore large and diverse datasets programmatically to understand the drivers of market behaviour
  • Analyse value across markets and recognize opportunities to improve revenue from those markets

Client Performance Reporting:

  • Prepare and deliver tailored performance reports for external clients, ensuring clarity and alignment with contractual requirements
  • Address client queries and provide insights into market performance and revenue streams

Data Management and Visualisation:

  • Build and maintain analytical tools, dashboards, and models for retrospective and real-time performance tracking
  • Collaborate with Habitat's tech teams to integrate successful tools into the company's product suite
  • Utilize code and visualisation tools to present complex data in an accessible format for both internal and external stakeholders

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with Habitat Trading & Operations teams, Business Development, and Commercial Leadership to align analytical outputs with business goals
  • Stay updated on market developments and emerging opportunities in battery storage optimization and communicate relevant changes to the wider team

Requirements

'Must have' skills and experience:

  • At least one year of experience in analytics or reporting roles within a similar industry, such as commodities or finance
  • Confidence in writing Python code for data analysis work and using associated libraries (Pandas, Plotly, or similar)
  • Knowledge of core probability and statistics concepts and how to apply them to analytics
  • Experience working with SQL databases and APIs as data sources
  • Ability to extract actionable insights from complex and noisy datasets
  • Detail-oriented with accurate reporting skills
  • Strong presentation and communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Knowledge of or demonstrable interest in learning about energy markets

'Nice to have' skills and experience:

  • Existing understanding of GB electricity markets, including BM and ancillary services
  • Familiarity with battery storage technology and revenue drivers
  • Experience writing production-quality Python code (version control, testing, CI)
  • Experience in forecasting, either fundamental or machine-learning based, especially probabilistic and time series forecasting
  • Familiarity with mathematical optimization and related Python libraries such as cvxpy
  • Experience in a client-facing role

Tools that you will likely be using:

  • Programming: Python, polars
  • Grafana, Streamlit, Marimo Notebooks, Claude AI
