Performance Architect – 12-Month Contract
Location: London, UK
Working Pattern: Hybrid – 2 days per week in the London office
Contract: 12 months
Rate: £700 per day inside I35
The Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced Performance Architect to define and drive performance strategy across large-scale enterprise applications, platforms, and technology solutions. This is an architecture-led role focused on ensuring that solutions are scalable, resilient, reliable, and capable of meeting demanding business and operational requirements. You will work across the full solution lifecycle, from architecture and design through testing, production readiness, and ongoing optimization.
You will collaborate closely with Enterprise Architects, CTOs, programme leadership, and engineering teams, providing technical direction on performance, capacity, scalability, and resilience.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and govern end-to-end performance strategies across applications, platforms, and enterprise solutions.
- Establish and validate Non-Functional Requirements (NFRs) covering scalability, availability, reliability, throughput, and response times.
- Develop sizing models, capacity plans, and workload forecasts to support business growth and changing demand.
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks across application, database, middleware, integration, infrastructure, and cloud layers.
- Provide architecture recommendations to improve system throughput, scalability, resilience, and resource utilization.
- Lead performance assessments across solution design, development, testing, and production-readiness stages.
- Define performance engineering standards, frameworks, tools, and governance processes.
- Drive performance risk assessment and recommend mitigation strategies for critical business systems.
- Partner with senior architecture and technology stakeholders to embed performance engineering throughout the solution lifecycle.
- Mentor engineering and architecture teams on performance engineering practices and emerging technologies.

What We're Looking For
You will have strong experience in Performance Architecture and Performance Engineering, ideally within large-scale enterprise or transformation programmes. Key experience includes:
- Performance architecture, engineering, and system optimization.
- Enterprise architecture and distributed system design.
- Defining and managing NFRs.
- Capacity planning, workload modeling, sizing, and forecasting.
- Application, database, middleware, infrastructure, and cloud performance tuning.
- End-to-end performance assessment and bottleneck analysis.
- Performance testing methodologies and tooling.
- Cloud-native architectures, microservices, and distributed platforms.
- Strong stakeholder management experience, including working with senior architects, technology leadership, and programme teams.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and technical decision-making skills.

Desirable Experience
Experience with some of the following would be advantageous:
- AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
- Site Reliability Engineering (SRE)
- Observability and monitoring
- Dynatrace, AppDynamics, New Relic, Grafana, or Azure Monitor
- DevOps and CI/CD
- Performance automation
- Docker and Kubernetes
- Event-driven architectures
- Large-scale digital transformation programmes
- Multi-vendor and geographically distributed delivery environments
- TOGAF, Cloud Architecture, or Performance Engineering certifications
