Salary:

£35,500 to £44,500 (depending on skills and experience)

Wimborne

About Us

Caterpillar Marine Power UK Ltd is located on the outskirts of Wimborne on the Ferndown and Uddens Business Improvement District. Positioned centrally along the south coast, it is located close to national and international transport links.

With approximately 130 members of staff, there is a long and distinguished history spanning over 50 years of manufacturing marine propulsion and auxiliary engines under the Cat® and Perkins Marine® brands. Genset packages ranging from 1.5 Litre to 7.1 Litre and 7.1 Litre propulsion engines are produced at the Wimborne site.

The facility employs a wealth of hugely experienced designers, engineers and technicians used to providing solutions for commercial, pleasure, and military customers. From the design, testing and building, each engine is proven before leaving the premises to ensure the best performance for the end-user.

The Opportunity:

This role is ideal for someone with a strong engineering foundation who is eager to apply analytical and simulation techniques to solve real-world product and system challenges. You'll bring sound technical knowledge, a curious and methodical approach to problem solving, and a desire to develop your expertise in simulation and virtual engineering.

As part of the Engineering team, you'll work closely with design, manufacturing, supply chain, and test engineers to support the development of Caterpillar products. Using simulation and analysis tools, you'll help evaluate the performance, reliability, and robustness of components and systems, providing the technical insights that guide engineering decisions and product improvements.

You'll be responsible for executing simulation activities and delivering accurate, timely analysis that supports project objectives. Working with stakeholders across the business, you'll help define engineering problems, assess potential solutions, and communicate clear recommendations based on data-driven analysis. Your work will have a direct impact on product development, validation processes, and the successful delivery of new technologies.

This is a varied and challenging role that requires strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly. You'll contribute to multiple projects, balancing technical rigour with practical engineering judgement while working within project schedules and business priorities.

While you may already have experience with engineering analysis, modelling, or simulation tools, we'll support your continued development through exposure to a broad range of products, technologies, and engineering challenges. You'll have opportunities to expand your technical capability, learn new simulation methods, and contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering processes and practices.

For a motivated engineer, this role provides an excellent opportunity to develop specialist simulation expertise while building a broader understanding of product development within a global engineering organisation. As your experience grows, you'll take on increasingly complex assignments, influence key engineering decisions, and play a significant role in delivering high-quality products to our customers.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the engineering teams to develop and execute projects.
  • Accountable for delivering timely, high-quality simulation and analysis impacting new products.
  • Partner with design, manufacturing, supply chain, and test teams to robustly deliver new and improved products.
  • Keep up-to-date on new technologies and drive continuous improvement to established techniques.

Qualifications:

  • Requires a degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.

Skills and Experience:

  • Accuracy and Attention to Detail: Understanding the necessity and value of accuracy; ability to complete tasks with high levels of precision.
  • Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of critical problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.
  • Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools, and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviours.
  • Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.
  • Technical Excellence: Knowledge of the following technology and various application methods:
    • Internal combustion engine fundamentals
    • Diesel engine performance and combustion principles
    • Thermodynamics and heat transfer
    • Fluid mechanics and gas flow behaviour
    • Computer-Aided Design & Engineering: Knowledge of tools and techniques in the following areas with the ability to produce, analyse, simulate and test product design drafts.
      • 1D system modelling and simulation
      • Multibody dynamics
      • Thermal analysis and cooling system simulation
      • Design optimisation techniques
      • Data analysis and interpretation
