The Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts (PQA) is a weekend performing arts academy offering tuition to children and young people aged 4–18. Students attend three-hour sessions that rotate through Comedy & Drama, Musical Theatre, and Film & Television, providing a varied and engaging learning experience. PQA’s teaching model is designed by professionals from the performing arts industry and the education sector, ensuring a balance of creative practice and strong educational value. Classes are structured to reflect realistic industry standards while remaining age-appropriate and supportive. The academy focuses on building confidence, skills, and enjoyment of performing arts in a safe, inclusive environment.
Role Description
The Performing Arts Teaching Assistant is a part-time, on-site role based at PQA Sunderland. The Teaching Assistant supports Lead Tutors during weekend academy sessions, helping to prepare studios and teaching materials, welcome students, and ensure smooth transitions between Comedy & Drama, Musical Theatre, and Film & Television classes. - Assisting with warm-ups and group activities
- Supervising students during exercises and rehearsals
- Providing encouragement and guidance to help learners develop confidence and performance skills
- Monitoring attendance
- Supporting classroom management
- Promoting safeguarding and wellbeing
- Helping with events, showcases, and assessments as required

The Teaching Assistant works closely with the academy team to maintain a professional, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.
Qualifications
- Experience or strong interest in performing arts, such as acting, musical theatre, or film & television production.
- Skills in supporting teaching and learning, including assisting with lesson activities, classroom management, and student engagement.
- Ability to communicate clearly and positively with children, young people, parents, and colleagues.
- Commitment to safeguarding, child protection, and maintaining a safe, inclusive environment for all students.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills, with reliability in a weekend, part-time setting.
- Collaborative approach, with the ability to take direction from Lead Tutors and contribute ideas to enrich sessions.
- Previous experience working with children or young people in an educational or youth setting is highly beneficial.
- Relevant training or qualifications in performing arts, education, or youth work are an advantage.
