Hours: Full time, Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm
Reports to: Client Manager
Role Purpose
The Personal Tax & Compliance Assistant supports the preparation of personal tax returns, sole trader income and expenditure accounts, and VAT working papers. The role focuses on accurate data preparation, organisation, and compliance support, ensuring information is complete and ready for review and submission by senior team members. All work must be completed accurately, consistently, and in line with WG working paper standards and deadlines.
1. Personal Tax Preparation
- Prepare Self-Assessment returns including employment, interest, dividends, and rental income
- Input information accurately into TaxCalc
- Prepare supporting working papers in WG format
- Identify missing information and request internally
- Ensure returns are complete and ready for review
2. Sole Trader Income & Expenditure
- Prepare simple income and expenditure accounts
- Analyse bank transactions and categorise income and costs
- Prepare figures for Self Assessment
- Highlight unusual items or missing information

3. MTD Spreadsheet Preparation
- Prepare monthly or quarterly income and expense summaries
- Ensure all periods are complete
- Maintain consistency with WG templates
- Identify missing data promptly
4. VAT Support
- Assist with VAT analysis and preparation of working papers
- Ensure totals reconcile to source data
- Identify standard, reduced, and zero-rated items where appropriate
- Highlight any uncertainty regarding VAT treatment
5. Information Management
- Maintain organised client files
- Ensure clear and complete digital records
- Identify missing or incomplete information
- Liaise internally to obtain outstanding items
6. Workflow & Deadline Management
- Manage allocated work to meet personal tax and VAT deadlines
- Raise capacity or deadline concerns early
- Ensure work is completed fully and not left partially complete

Qualifications
Candidates should possess strong Regulatory Compliance and Law skills relevant to personal tax and UK tax legislation. Candidates should possess excellent Interpersonal Skills and Communication abilities for effective client interaction and internal collaboration. Candidates should possess solid Analytical Skills to interpret tax rules, review documentation, and identify issues or opportunities. Relevant professional qualifications (e.g., ATT, CTA, AAT, BSc in a relevant area or equivalent experience) are highly beneficial. Prior experience in personal tax, accounting practice, or a similar compliance-focused role is advantageous but not essential. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines are important. Proficiency in tax and accounting software, along with general IT literacy (e.g., MS Office), is beneficial.
