Job Summary
The Ministry of Defence, Civil Service workforce is diverse, with many different functions and professions ranging from cyber and digital transformation, police officers, security guards, trainers, human resources, teachers, psychologists, storekeepers, and policy secretariat staff to support the British Army.
Headquarters 160th (Welsh) Brigade, a Joint Military Command (JMC), employs more than 100 people across Wales and plays a key role in supporting the Army’s activities throughout the country. As the Army’s regional headquarters in Wales, the JMC brings together military personnel, civil servants, and partner organisations to coordinate Army activity, support resilience operations, and maintain strong links with communities, public services, and the Welsh Government.
The JMC is responsible for planning and coordinating military support within Wales when required, providing administrative support to soldiers and their families, and ensuring the Army has the facilities, infrastructure, and services needed to operate effectively across the country.
Our workforce is diverse, with staff working in areas such as training, logistics, security, stores management, finance, project and programme management, and business support. Together, these teams provide a wide range of services that help the Army operate effectively across Wales, supporting both military personnel and the communities in which they live and work.
The post offers an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of a dynamic and busy Brigade Headquarters as the home of the Army in Wales.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job Description
In this role, you will play a key role in supporting workforce planning, recruitment, career management, and people-related governance across 160th (Welsh) Brigade. Working closely with senior leaders, HR specialists, and external organisations, you will help ensure the organisation attracts, develops, and retains the people it needs to deliver its objectives.
This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience in workforce planning, recruitment, talent management, governance, performance management, and strategic HR within a unique and dynamic organisation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Providing professional advice to managers and senior leaders on workforce planning, personnel policies, career management, and organisational requirements.
- Managing recruitment and workforce planning activities, including coordinating vacancies, preparing job specifications, supporting selection processes, and monitoring staffing requirements.
- Identifying workforce gaps and supporting succession planning to ensure future organisational needs are met.
- Coordinating annual performance appraisal processes, providing guidance to managers, and ensuring reporting standards are maintained.
- Managing staff recognition programmes, including honours, awards, commendations, and other recognition schemes.
- Organising and supporting promotion, grading, and appointment boards, ensuring processes are fair, transparent, and compliant with policy.
- Monitoring and assuring personnel processes to ensure compliance with organisational policies and best practice.
- Preparing reports, workforce analyses, briefings, and recommendations to support strategic decision-making.
- Providing secretariat support to boards and committees, including arranging meetings, preparing documentation, recording decisions, and tracking actions.
- Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with stakeholders across Defence, the Army Cadet Force, and wider partner organisations.

Essential Skills Required:
- Must be organised and a proactive HR professional with strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- Comfortable working with senior leaders, managing competing priorities, analysing workforce information, and providing clear, practical advice on people-related matters
- Good analytical skills
- A good understanding of MS 365 applications
Please note: The successful candidate will be required to attend a 4 day training Military Career Management course at the Army Personnel Centre, Glasgow. This is to be completed within 6 months of being in post, subject to course availability.
